My wife's car just started doing this. It's like bad foot odor from the A/C. The in-cabin filter was changed out about 3 months ago. Nothing on the engine side of the filter, it's clean there.

But anyways.. after I took out the Air Spencer air freshener.. the smell started clearing up.. Left the AC on for I don't know.. like 45 minutes and had it going in the car, switching off from it getting air from the outside and circulating the air from the inside. Hopefully by today or tomorrow the smell will be completely gone. I wanted to test the air freshener in my dad's car, but he got pissed and yelled at me when I suggested it lol.

If your cabin filter is clean but it still stinks like you described, it might mean that a mouse might have died and is still somewhere rotting in your car and the A/C just didn't suck it up.
If what I just said it true and you can't find a body... It goes away after awhile.... Lol.

 

I live in SoCal Hb though and it never gets really cold or like anything like that.. the weather is usually mild all year. And plus I took apart like everythingg to where you could look up the glovebox and see the sky. Stuck my hand through and felt around the whole area. (If you would of posted this early I DEFINITELY would NOT have done that) but anyways yeah I did that and there's NOTHING there lol.

The air has to go through the filter before it gets into the piping that goes out the vents into the cabin right?
