Any autoX updates/stories out there?
I'm now running my sedan in the street tire classes in Arizona in DS, doing pretty well... car is still stock except for 245/45/17 BFG KDs
I'm jonesing to go to STX, what do you think of the following suspension set up:
rs*r 350z springs
d-spec shocks
Hotchkis sways
17x8 35mm offset RPM2s with the 245/45/17 BFG KDs
was reading about the rs*r spings in another post, seems like a good choice, but not sure if the drop is too much and I'm sure they don't ride like a caddy, i like the adjustablity the d-spec's and sways offer. by the way, where's the hot ticket to pick up the d-specs? apex in phoenix has them on their web site, shocks only, for $539, seems like a decent price???

Re: Autocross!
I have the 6MT sedan with the sport suspension and if I may make a suggestion. With this as your baseline, the fastest way around the track is through better brakes.
For me this is the best spent mod money and is a project I am currently working on. I have the stock non-Brembos. They work fantastic on the street, but one thing I noticed when I was on the track was very serious brake fade.
My brakes were completely fried by the middle of the second heat. So much so, that my choices were to go screaming uncontrolably into a turn and run off the track, or, I could slow down and stay on the track... I picked the latter.
My lap times could have been much better if weren't for smoked brakes.

Re: Autocross!
i hear ya for track events, but for autocross, if i want so stay in the stock class, about all i can do is a pad change. stock brakes are fine for the speeds and distance you see in an autocross...

Re: Autocross!
cwmizner,
I AutoX and track. I have a base 6MT. You can see my set up below. I stayed with the Eibach sways and prokit springs. They work great.
What year is your car? Mine is a 2003.5 which came with an open differential. The new sedans come with the VLSD which is better than nothing, but the hot set up for STX (which is where I run) is the Kaaz LSD. The car is truly hooked up. The LSD and the sway bars probably made the biggest handling difference.
I would agree with Hydrazine on the brake issue for the track. But your right at AutoX brakes aren't as important. Although I was at the same track event as Hydrazine and I also cooked my brakes. I had stock pads and rotors at the rear and Hawk HPS pads and stock rotors at the front. After the track event I switched my rotors to the OEM replacement Stoptech slotted rotors and the Hawk HPS pads. If you run in STX you can switch rotors (slotted or drilled) and pads, but not the calipers. The Stoptech OEM replacement slotted rotors seem to have a little more bite, but they are a bit more noisey.

Re: Autocross!
mine is a 2003.5 also, open diff, have discussed them quite a bit a few months ago, was working with Quiafe for a bit on getting them to build one, but they flaked out for the most part...
is Don (leadfoot) still around? he did well in the Houston solo2 tour event last year...
what region do you autocross? mostly WRX in STX with you? how are your results?

Re: Autocross!
I run mainly in the San Diego, CA region. Their web site is www.sdr-scca.com . As you stated there are alot of WRX's in STX, but I haven't found them to be to big of a threat. My main threat is a couple of National Champion BMW's 325's. The last event I was at was in August. I have been trying some track events. Track events are great, but alot more wear and tear on the car. I run the Falken Azenis Sport 245/45/17. They are the class of the field in STX. I use to run in ESP with the Kuhmo Victoracers. That was fun and man are they sticky. You should be able to run R compound in DS. Are you still thinking of getting a LSD?

Re: Autocross!
cool, i know some phx guys that get out to san diego once in a while
i go back and forth on to stay in DS or go STX
while I notice my inside tire spinning sometimes, not sure how much time it's costing me, i try to drive knowing i don't have a lsd...
i'm sticking to the street tire classes in arizona for the rest of the year, after that, who knows...
might be getting some shocks next, gives me flexability to run either DS or eventually STX...

6speedG35sedan:
I've got an '04 6MT, and am just beginning to explore the idea of autocross and/or tracking it. If I do, the car will remain my daily driver (in which I must occasionally ferry business passengers), so I can't go too crazy, but I already feel that the stock (viscuous) LSD leaves something to be desired, and I was thinking Falken Ziex or something similar for tire replacement (using fattest tires possible on stock rims), as a good alternative for grip vs. rate of treadwear.
I see that you are running 245/45/17's - are you running the Falken's on stock rims? If so, how do they fit in the wheelwells - any rubbing? How much has the Eibach package lowered the car? How does this size tire affect the speedometer?
The Kumho Victoracers sound too "sticky" to last long in street use (10k miles or so??), but how do the Falken's perform - a good compromise between sheer grip and longevity ??
Any suggestions on a dual purpose street/track tire ??
Thanks in advance.

Re: Autocross!
the 245/45/17s work fine on the stock rims, nowhere near rubbing.
i'd strongly suggest not doing any mods that will take you out of the stock class although you may not be too bad off in STX.
springs lower the car an inch or so, many many out there.
victoracers are not a street tire, they'd last maybe 1000, yes ONE thousand miles on the street, there are a track only tire.
the single most important mod for autocrossing is the tire choice. i'd say there are no more than 3 you should consider, the BFG KD, Kuhmo MX or Falken Azenis (not the Ziex)

Thanks for the quick reply! Nice to hear from someone who has a G, and can speak from experience (you go to the tire store, and theyll sell you anything - "oh yeah, these are the BEST").
Since you autocross, and track the car occasionally, you must shift "aggresively" (as this car was meant to be). I wonder also if you have (or had) any problems with your 6MT - mine's pretty notchy (sometimes even balky) through the shift gate, especially when you're trying to shift fast, and lately I've been having grinding on hard shifts from 1st to 2nd, and also from 5th to 6th at almost any speed, if shifted quickly?
Thanks also for the strong suggestion on "no mods" - I want to start stock and then progress in class as my ability and desire dictates, just a good set of tires and here we go, eh?
Thanks again !
