Oil Filter Hassle

Today, I did the oil change on my 2003 G35 and the oil filter was stuck. When I managed to get it loose, the filter was still stuck on the thread bolt that came out. Any idea on why it may have been stuck?

Your saying that the filter was stuck directly on the threaded end? If so it sounds like the who ever did the previous oil change crossed threads, but even with that said they wouldn't be able to tighten it enough and you would of had a oil leak. Thats my only guess, but heres a tip always fill the filter up with oil b4 placing it back on and rub some oil on the rubber sealant

Probably just some jacka** that didn't know what he was doing. The filters are really only supposed to be hand tight plus another quarter turn or so. Just another reason why I don't trust anyone else to touch my car. At least the filter on these cars is easy to reach.

Prefilling? I might give that a try next time. Thanks for the tip. It's just hard to describe the problem since I didn't get a picture. I'm trying to look for one so I can show you guys what the problem looked like.

True. Reminds me of the guy who tightened my filter is what caused the problem. He said that hand tightening is too loose and the oil would leak out. Last time I trust an idiot like that.

Here's a pic. It's not my picture though. Just found it off some website to show what I meant when I took off the filter. Thread got stuck to the filter. Managed to get the filter off and reinstall the thread.

On many aftermarket filters, you cannot prefil them since there is a bypass valve that wont let oil circulate unless there is 5-7psi or higher flowing.

Also pre-filling the filter on the horizontal screwing filter will defiantly make a mess, but definitely rub some oil on the rubber sealant.

The horizontal filter makes it more difficult, but I still fill mine about 1/4 of the way up before installing. I also rub a little oil on the gasket, snug it up by hand and then give it an extra 1/4 turn. I've always done it this way and have never had any problems.

I've definitely never seen the threads come out of the block before. Only an idiot would tighten it that much.

The same goes for the oil pan drain plug. When I purchased the car, the first time I changed the oil, there were 4 or 5 crush washers on the plug and it was tightened so tight I had to use a breaker bar. Never again

Was this oil change done by a shop/lube place?

Take the filter and the part that came off and tell them to fix it.

Were the threads cross threaded?

Thats messed up

Not sure I'd trust the guys who effed it up in the first place, but I'd never go back (and that's why I always do my own!)

Man, that's bad news. Were you able to tell if the filter was cross-threaded, i.e. did the new filter screw on easily? Must have or you'd have said something, I'm sure. Sounds to me like the old one was seized on...wonder how long it was on there? You might also look into whether the 'thread' should have some threadlock on it when reinstalled to prevent this from happening again.

Yea, it was a pain. I managed to get the filter off the thread bolt by using a table clamp to hold it tight enough but not to dent it. Then, I just used some oil filter wrench to get it off. After that, I assumed that it was ok to put the thread bolt back on.
