Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
3 weeks ago i went to the track and ran a 14.29 @ 99.45 and last night after installing the Crawford V5 Plenum, my bes run was a 14.5 @ 97 can someone tell me why i am losing power.
Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
well, it might be because this one is defective. you can always sell it to me for cheaper. =)

Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
well what happened was i put 225/55/r17 tires on the car from the stock 215/55/r17's and i was thinking that the difference in the rolling mass would have cause the difference in my times, but people on another post said that wouldnt have caused me to lose that much...... one of the tech forums say the crawford plenum gives you 20 hp at redline,
Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
Sounds really wierd that you actually lost power from a system which is supposed to make the air flow better....
Hope you find out what happened.

Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
How long ago did you install the plenum? The ECU takes time to adjust. Reset it to help make it adjust much faster, but if not, it could take up to 2 weeks depending how much you drive to adjust.

Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
And what other factors were at play when you went to the track? What were the weather conditions? What were the track conditions? Knowing what the baseline is for a stock G35, why not get it dynoed to know for sure whether you are making an extra 20HP or not?

even if i left the negative terminal overnight. cause i hooked it back on right before i went to the track.

It can if your car was running lean, and the ecu was backing the timing off because of this. Until your ECU learns the new airflow your car will feel slower most likely. Just my opinion.

Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
the ecu was programmed by technosquare for the plenum, even if thats the case is it still gonna take 2 weeks to learn everything????? cause i raced a 1.8t jetta the other night at the track and lost horribly, and he didnt have many mods, i wanted to cry, cause everyoen else on here talks about winning races.
Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
What car do you have? 5AT or 6MT? What tires did you have stock and what did you put on afterwards?

Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
I debated about buying one of these plenums as well. Seems that it gives more top-end power, and some don't like the clattery noise. I'm still holding off for now since I'm not convinced of the benefits based on how I drive the car.
Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
Colder weather in most cases will actually work against you on skinny street compound tires, as you will have traction issues. My best times at the track is typically set while the track surface temp is high and almost never towards the end of the night. Doing quick burn outs will help some, but again that is really meant for Drag tires.
So, instead of looking at your ET, which weighs heavily on the initial 60' time, look for increased trap speed. The trap speed is a directly related to the amount of horsepower you have and hardly influenced by a poor launch.
Of all the mods I've added for the sedan, I must say the plenum was the most significant by both the seat of the pants feeling as well as on a dyno.
If you did indeed get slower from the plenum ... then something's a miss there. Have your AF checked out. It is also possible to have too aggressive timing map from the TS ECU, which meant the system will revert down to the most conservative map (of the 3). ... simply speculation however. Also check for leaks around the plenum gasket!
The wise thing would have been to dyno before and after, but I'm sure you already know that
Good Luck,

Re: Installed Crawford Plenum and Lost Power
ckg,
The post plenum drivability is actually better, because power gain is for both top-end as well as low/mid-end (check dyno plot in the above post). I have a 6mt, the added low/mid-end allows me to short shift a bit earlier ... saving a bit more fuel.
With respect to noise ... yes, it will be noticable. Since I owned the Kinetix and briefly the Crawford v1, I can say the Crawford is much quieter. So, if you are concerned w. noise, then look no further than the Crawford.
Back to the noise. Both will exhibit increase valvetrain noise during idle. It is very apparently during the first few weeks or so. Eventually, you will not hear it as you get use to it. The 2ndary noise occurs under full acceleration and most prominent past 4000rpm. If you are familiar with the sound of the JWT Pop-charger ... it is exactly the same w. the Kinetix. The Crawford is a much milder version of that sound. In addition, the Kinetix has a faint, but very interesting super-charger like whail upon throttle lift-off.
I have grown to love the sound it make and did not hit me until the time I had to remove the plenum for a while. I missed the darn thing! ... glad it's back in now
