Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
This is not only designers achievement however the credit is due here.
I'd love to see French cars sold in US again. Especialy Peugeot 206. Very fun car.

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
that's correct. Ghosn was brought up a Brazilian but he has an Arab background. He speaks alot of languages very fluently and French being one of them. He's a very very talented man and i'm happy for what he's done so far.

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
Infiniti has made great strides. A few years ago, they weren't even on most car buyer's radar screens. If the G35 hadn't been available when I bought my sedan in 2002, I would have been driving a BMW - so, I'm sure they've taken some sales from the Germans.
On the other hand, Infiniti faces a major challenge at the higher end, because I think that they're still not perceived as a luxury brand the way BMW and Mercedes are. The new M45 will be a big test as will whatever the next Q45 turns out to be.

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
I wish they had Peugeot& Renault over here. Some of the world's best WRC cars come from these stables.
And talking of imports, bring over Alfa Romeo..I grew up with all these brands and they were some of the best cars I ever owned.

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
Well. isn't the "next" Q45 already here, the '05 is all new, much different car from what I have seen.

When did the Q45 go to the current style, isn't it around the same time as the G35?

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
I grew up with Peugeots. A pair of 504's (wagon and sedan) from the mid-seventies and a 505 (sedan) when it came out a few years later. They were my parents' cars and I remember them as smooth riding but real low tech. No power steering on the 504's and underpowered. Funky styling! I can see why they didn't succeed in the US. The trend at the time, among foreign car buyers, was for more powerful Mercedes and BMWs.
I read rumors that Peugeot and Renault may come back to the US market. This would appear to be a good move for Renault, since its merger with Nissan would allow synergies in marketing the brand. I agree that Peugeot has a lot to offer, but it would cost a fortune to carve out a niche in the market for upscale imports. Especially since they would be starting from scratch. I wouldn't expect any of those sweet little rally cars to make it over. More likely, larger sedans would be in the offing.
What these brands would bring is diversity to a marketplace that really needs it!

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
I'm not talking about safety innovation, I'm talking about actual safety (crash tests). I never said that Japanese premium cars have always been safety leaders, but increasingly, they're becoming better than the Germans (ie recently). NHTSA (gov't) crash test ratings:
IS300
Three 5 star ratings
Two 4 star ratings
TL
Three 5 star ratings
Two 4 star ratings
A4
One 5 star rating
Four 4 star ratings
3-Series
Two 5 star ratings
Two 4 star ratings
One 3 star rating
C-Class
Two 5 star ratings
Three 4 star ratings
Both the IS300 & TL did better than their German competitors.

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
The TL, ES330, IS300, & G35 were all branded IIHS "Best Pick".
The M-B C-Class, which you cited, in IIHS Side Tests, received an overall rating of "Acceptable", including "Marginal" for "torso" injury measures to the driver & "Acceptable" for "structure/safety cage".

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
Reliability? Maybe. Value? Possibly Safety? No way....
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo are the safety innovation power houses of the automotive industry. New safety features and structural designs first appear in these three brands and then trickle down to the Japanese premium market a few years later, and then to the American market a decade or so after that. Without BMW, MBZ, and Volvo we would all still be driving around in shoddy deathtraps.
Come to think of it, I can't really put my finger on any safety "first" that has come from a Japanese brand. Volvo, Mercedes and BMW have each brought cutting edge safety engineering to the masses. These are the companies that pioneered the crumple zone, front airbags, side airbags, head protection airbags, ABS, Stability control, brake assist, interlocking door anchors, battery safety terminal, seat belt pretensioners, seat belt force limiters, disc brakes, strong unibody structures... I could literally list a few pages of things like this.
In fact, until very recently, Acura, Lexus, and especially Infiniti were receiving embarassing crash test scores, while the European brands were getting "best picks." Just take a look at http://www.iihs.org/vehicle_ratings/ratings.htm and see for yourself. 4 years ago, the BMW 5 series and Mercedes E class were tested by the IIHS and received “best pick" ratings with greens across the board. Only one Japanese Luxury car, the Lexus LS400 achieved such a rating.. Even today, the Japanese are still playing catch up to achieve the safety levels that the European brands hade achieved 10+ years ago. Various new models from Acura, Infiniti and Lexus are getting marked down in crash tests in areas like "structure/safety cage" and injury measurements for "head and neck" "chest" and "legs.” Take our G for example, it's score got slashed for inadequate "head and neck" protection while cars such as the enemy BMW 3 and Merc C class have all perfects.
Another example is the BMW X5, which was rated the safest vehicle ever tested by the IIHS. The Infiniti FX got an overall good score, but it was tarnished by an "acceptable" head injury measurement.
I would imagine that if you were to ratchet up the impact speeds from 40mph to say 60mph and retested all the current models, we would probably once again see a large performance spread with the Germans high up on the list and the Japanese below in the middle tier.
Anyway, I love my gorgeous black obsidian G35 coupe 6mt, but if I were shopping for cutting edge, top notch safety, I would have spent the money elsewhere...

Re: Is Infiniti making headway against the Germans?
ok...well of course we all know that back in the day, nissan/infiniti were nothing. Almost every car out there was better. But now we see Nissan/Infiniti being one of the best cars in the world. Well, Carlos Ghosn (CEO of Nissan) took the company over when it had a $5.6 Billion defecit. Now, the company has a $2.5 Billion profit. So, after Ghosn took over, he decided to unleash these unbelievable cars and his main target was to beat german cars. And from what we can tell today, he's doing a pretty damn good job at it. Now, there's a French car i think its called Reno or Rino or something like that, well anyways, they merged with Nissan a few years back and now that Nissan is doing great, Ghosn is now focusing on getting Rino out of the defecit by doing the same thing he did with Nissan. Ghosn was named 2004's "Father of the year" for being the number one business man in the world. Bill Gates came in second. So, that's another thing that tells us that he's just doing GREAT things. I'm extremely happy to own a car that he made!

I'll say, I had a '73 Datsun Pickup, that thing was totally unsafe, bent very easily, a friend pulled himself under the truck to help me bleed the clutch, and afterwards, I couldn't open the pasenger door, he bent the damned fender, the truck got sold quickly after that, LOL!
