Starter died at 175,000 miles

Finally at 175,000 the car wouldn't start, and it was the starter.

Cost at the dealer for the starter is $330. It's very easy to remove the old one and install the new one.

Once you have the car up on stands, it shouldn't take any more than 20 minutes to install a new one.

Yes, original motor and tranny. Motor runs as good as from the factory, the tranny has been feeling funny for the last 20,000 miles, but no official problems or slipping.

i love that our engine and tranny will last for 175,xxx!!

175k?! mine died at 82k. according to the dealer, it was because it was too close to the crawford headers, overheating it. i have since had the headers wrapped with heat wrap, no problems since then (knock on wood). new starter cost me $712 installed at the dealer.

How did you do the starter? When I was doing my transfer case fluid, I saw the starter and tried to see how it could be replaced. Does that panel where the steering rack is come off easily? If so...they it does look like a simple job

Good news for all G35 owners. Did you bought your car brand new? If you did, can you give us advice on the maintenance of the car to last that many miles? Fluid changes, etc... I have about 59K miles so far, hope to get to
100K before trading it in.

Do your scheduled maintenance. Almost any car today should be able to get near 200k miles if you take care of it. I had a crappy ford ranger that I just changed the oil every 3-5k miles and it made it 200k miles. The original timing belt snapped at 200k... car could have probably done another 100-200k miles if I wanted to.

I thought my starter went out at around 80. Seems the nut back itself off the power wire. It was only around 125 when i picked it up from the parts store with a core.

712 dollars i would shoot myself.

Its very simple to remove the starter. There are 2 bolts that hold it to the bell housing. There is a nut that holds the positive wire to the starter.

1) Disconnect Batt
2) Remove Nut (12mm i believe)
3) Remove 2 bolts to bell housing (14mm I believe)

Starter will slide out forward towards the front of the car then down and back after you get it out of the bell housing.

That simple.

Its located on the Passenger Side.


I just turned 160K miles on the odometer yesterday. Car runs like a champ. Oil change every 4-5K miles with full synthetic. Drain/fill the trans fluid every 30K miles or so. Diff fluid ever 30-40K. Power steering suck/fill as opposed to full flush.
