Flaccid Steering Column

Has anyone experienced a "flaccid" steering column? By this I mean the adjustable steering mechanism not staying in place and just falling into one's lap?

I have a service scheduled for Friday, but I am concerned from a safety standpoint as to the driveability of the vehicle. In addition, it's not very manly....

Can anyone with like experience share feedback?

Thanks!

Re: Flaccid Steering Column

I have had trouble with mine on two occaisions, just had it worked on the second time the week before last, hope it works for good this time! Thanks for reminding me, I have to swing by the dealer again, it looks like they didn't put one panel back on correctly! That isn't a great design IMO, but I guess all Japanese cars and trucks have a similar setup.

Can't vouch for Geo's 'special Infiniti blue potion', - At best probably only a temporary 'fix'.
I'm thinking a better 'grip' would help. .

In the meantime, be careful.

Colin,
Mine has been hard to push up on occaision, then it seems to slip back down, they did adjust it again, it's still rather snug, but the dealer said he didn't want to make it too loose, not sure what that means! So not sure a better grip would help in this case.

I slipped a couple of those blue pills into my tank and my steering column was very rigid for about an hour, then the airbag deployed suddenly and the steering column became flaccid again. Seems like Geo's fix is only temporary.

Re: Flaccid Steering Column

It sounds like you are experiencing steering column erectile dysfunction (SCED). Many G35s occasionally experience SCED. Its important to remember that the cause can be as much a psychological issue as it is a physical one. Many cases of SCED are linked to "performance anxiety". Think back to a time when your G35 didn't perfom up to your expectations...Did you respond with harsh or critical statements? You might have....and this can cause poor self-esteem which can lead to SCED. Its important to be patient with your steering column and not put a lot of pressure on it to remain rigid. Rember to encourage and acknowledge your G35 when it performs well and you will soon find yourself on your way to a healthy driving experience once again. Good luck!
