Factory rear bumper replacement

Well, the wife took my '04 Sedan (Diamond Graphite) out to run some errands this evening and ended up backing into another car in a parking lot. Not too much damage on the minivan (left a note, we'll see how it ends up), but my right rear corner is pushed in.

Before I grab my tube of KY and head over to the dealership, are there any sources for competitively priced factory replacements (already painted)? And how difficult of an install would this be?

Re: Factory rear bumper replacement

As far as I know, the bumper comes unpainted. I had quotes from body shops of about $700-$1200. So it varied a great deal. The actual bumper is only $200-$300. The painting for an ivory pearl car is expensive because it is a 3 stage paint. This includes the bumper, painting and installation. I think some people have had it done for a little less. Best to get a quote from several body shops...Good luck

Re: Factory rear bumper replacement

Thanks. I've already called two dealerships in my area and neither have a body shop. Each gave me the name of shops they deal with, and one of them is one that my family has used before. So I should be able to get a couple of estimates this afternoon.

Installation is fairly easy if you are in any way mechanically inclined. It's basically a bolt-on.
There are some good pics & a proceedure in the shop manual download here

Heres a thing you can try if the paint isn't messed up get a hair dryer or heat gun and heat up the area easyly and you can useally pop out the dent I work in a bodyshop here in Mn and it can be done. Just my 2cents.

Re: Factory rear bumper replacement

I haven't been able to find a source of replacement painted bumpers, so while I am comfortable doing it myself, I don't think I'll be able to.

As far as the heat gun, I read that last night while searching the forum. Unfortunately, it does appear that the paint has been scratched down to the black plastic underneath, so even if I pushed it out, it would still need to be repainted.

Thanks.

Re: Factory rear bumper replacement

Well, two estimates - $574.10 and $620.51.

The difference appears to be mainly in the lower estimate not including $39.68 for replacing the right rear energy absorber. I don't know how essential that is, or if it even needs to be replaced.

Now the quandry is that the shop that did the lower estimate is closer and more convenient, but the one that is further away, while higher, is one that my family has used in the past. But it's good to know that they were essentially in line with the exception of the one part the lower priced shop doesn't plan on replacing.

Decision time.

For $47, I would go with the shop that you have used before. Hopefully, they will do a better job for a repeat customer.

Re: Factory rear bumper replacement

That's what I'm thinking. I'm also got a pretty good feeling that the lower priced shop will figure out it needs the same absorber and add it on later. He did make a point of stating that there's always a chance of more damage once the bumper comes off (understandable) and also put it on the estimate.

They did come recommended by the dealership that sold me my car, so I don't think they're doing anything out of the ordinary, but may be underestimating a little bit to get the business then make it up on the back end.

Re: Factory rear bumper replacement

Actually, I was thinking about just kicking in the left side so they would match and be done with it.

Re: Factory rear bumper replacement

Just had the same dent on my car too about a week ago. I will tell you, it was just a slight bump, and cost me almost $600 to replace it. How can Nissan design a flimsy crap like this! The car that I backed into was a Honda Accord, not a scratch on his bumper! When Nissan designed this bumper, they see $$$$$$.
