I did mine 7 1/2 months ago, and I think I only have one rock chip.
Even if I had to repaint it every year it would still be worth it, but at the rate it's holding up it should be much longer than that before I need to repaint.
I used Duplicolor Self-Etching primer, Valspar Flat Black and Valspar Flat Clear (along with lots of prep, lots of sanding before, and between coats)

I painted mine years ago. Even after lots of prep, I've had to repaint it three times. I gave up on the paint in October and wrapped my grill in flat black vinyl. It looks better and after 5 months, it still looks perfect. I used 2" wide heavy duty electrical tape. Took me about 20 minutes to do it. Should have done this years ago.
