I know there are dozens of oil consumption threads and I've read the TSBs and the common belief (or fact) that Nissan used crappy rings on these motors.

But what do you do if you have a pre-2005, AT, Non Rev motor and you're out of warranty (Years and Miles)?

Seriously, what options are there? Repair - How Much? Replace Engine - How Much? Drive it to the ground?

For me, this came on suddenly. Got a SES light, figured it was the gas cap so I tighten it. As I pull into the drive, the oil light comes on. I pulled the code and got a P0420 (Catalytic Converter). Check the POS dipstick we have and its not touching the stick. Only 2500 miles since last oil change.

All maintenance performed at prescribed intervals by Infiniti Dealership.

Where do I start?

 

Pretty rare for a non-revup and an AT to have oil consumption. Did you check the oil pan for leaks?

 

Not a drop on the drive way or the parking lot at work. Engine bay dusty, but otherwise clean.

 

just add oil to it and check it after 500 to 1000 miles... i just got an 07 6mt and drove it the 2200 miles home from where i bought it. and i was out of oil.. added 2 qrts and then next day changed my oil.. i then drove it 500 miles and was low another qrt.. i added some more and since have been 1000 miles and no oil loss at all...

my warranty ends 7/2011 but infinti say my motor isnt stock motor.. sucks i bought it that way not knowing motor was swapped, but its strong as hell and faster than my 03 g coupe was...

 

I think there's only 2 options here.

1. just keep adding oil to it and drive it until it blows up.

or

2. swap the motor out.

 

I'm thinking of towing/driving it to the dealer just to see what they say. I'm just sick right now.

 

I wouldnt get all worked up just yet. Top it off and keep an eye on it. Its possible the dealer didnt put enough oil in last time they changed your oil.

 

If you need a new engine, they're not very expensive. You can easily find a used long block for probably $500. I've seen a brand new long block on eBay for $1000.

 

I wouldnt do anything drastic just yet

Put half a quart at a time in, and check the dip stick.

Check your oil before you start your car everytime and see what your results are.

 

Please pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is a "non revup" motor. I have a 2004 base leather G35 with 104,000 I just bought last week. I've already drained and re-filled oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, and coolant without any problems. Also changed plugs as well. No problems found other than the transmission fluid looking just a tad bit darker than I usually like to see it. Plugs looked shot and I will NOT wait 100,000 before replacing them again. I think 60k is plenty even on double-platinum.

Firing a gap that's been created after 100k puts a lot of stress on the rest of the ignition system (mainly the coils). Anyway, back to the point... I haven't owned the car long enough to gauge whether or not I'm consuming any oil but the plugs looked clean. The production date on mine is 07/2004. I don't know if that helps anyone in determining if I have this so-called "non-revup" motor.

It's really important you check oil level every 2 days actually. Mine has been burning oil since middle of 2009 but still going strong. The simplest thing to do is take the motor apart and replace pistons and rings only with aftermarket ones and put everything back on. Cheap and effective. Will last 200k+ miles if it's put back together right.
