Alternator Belt Missing.....PLZZZ HELP!

The car is mostly driven by the wife, and she came home telling me that it smelled like rubber burning, and there is a light on!
Anyway, I went to look, the alternator light is on, and the belt that connects the alternator, and I am assuming the AC as well is missing.
Lately the car was making this noise, and I figured it was a belt, but I never got around to look at it, too damn busy!

Anyhow, so how could the belt break off? Was there something seizing up, or just an old belt?

Did this ever happen to anyone? BTW it's an automatic and it just hit 130k km, and we never had any issues with the car!

Thanks in advance!

Have the belts ever been changed? If not it's most likely just a **** belt get a new one. Turn the alternator by hand see if it moves freely and any Idler pulleys that the belt rides on as well to see if any of them are seized. Basic maintenance man get on it and keep it up.

Like said, spin the pulleys by hand and make sure they all spin. Not uncommon for an idler pulley to seize up and cause the belt to rub, burn and snap.

Replacing the belts is easy, and you can get replacements from auto parts store (gates or gatorback are good replacements)

Btw, there are two belts. The ac uses it's own belt, and the alternator andnother accessories use another

Tonight I'm about to replace this belt, and see what's the problem....I hope nothing major but a worn belt due to milage.

Thanks for the insight though!

I was wrong, it was the AC belt that was missing, and the alternator belt was also worn. Anyhow I replaced both the belts, my AC works just fine, but there is another issue, my battery and brake lights are on, does this indicate a bad alternator?

Thanks!

Maybe but I would check the wires on the back of the alternator first to make sure that when the ac belt broke it didn't unplug or damage any of the wires to the alternator, and if everything seems ok take it to your local parts store and they can check the alternator for free for you.

check your battery.

your car runs mostly on your alt when the car is running. If there is no alt then the car is running off the battery alone.
This may have drained your battery. Either see if you can charge it or buy a new battery

It's all fixed up, it was the alternator. I got a rebuilt one and replaced it last night, all the lights are off, and the car is running perfectly.....however I must add that I had my share of cars, and the G35 is by far the worst to work on!
