Well, the surpising good news yesterday was when Infiniti called me to tell me that the car was ready. Less than 6 days to swap out the tranny including a weekend. That was a pretty good turn-around. The bad news is that they don't know what caused the failure. Service guy said it was most likely just the solenoids. In his words they are just a $20-$30 part. He said the tranny i got was brand new, as they dont even make refurbished trannies for the X yet, and that Infiniti will disect my bad one to see what the problem was. That doesn't make me feel better though, as I still find it very worriesome that a brand new car with under 9K miles had a tranny issue.

that sucks. and yes in fact honda trannies have major problems. the GF has a 99 v6 accord and the tranny's a bit jerky. no worries... when it fails i can do the tranny swap. or she wants to get the g35 coupe. damn matching cars and not even married... wtf

Could it be that the secondary jerk we feel when shifting into Drive has something to do with the AWD engaging the front and rear wheels separately? Maybe the front kicks in then the rear, or vice versa. Anyway, I've got 21K and have always allowed the 2nd jerk to occurr before accelerating. No known tranny problems so far.

I love the fact that to check the tranny fluid you have to take it to the dealer. Is there any way to get a dipstick?

I was thinking something along those lines as well. It's really not a huge deal and as a matter of fact I'm probably not even going to mention it on this service visit. I just want to get my car repaired and get out of there. I actually was waiting to drive another 04 x to see if it's a common trait with this car. If so, I can live with it. From what you guys are saying maybe they all (or some? most?) do that. I'm just going to get back to enjoying the new ride. The way I see it I have plenty of warranty left.

One of the reasons I didn't puchase a TL was due to Acura tranny problems. I think if Infiniti had a problem we would have heard more about it by now.

Zodiak, let us know how the new trans is working out.

JCV is correct go to any Acura CL or TL forum and look around you'll see they have mad issues with thetranny. I drive a 2001 CL-S and its got 74K and still on original tranny(knock on wood), but others have not been so lucky. Its gotten soo bad with Honda/Acura that they have instated a 7year 100k mile warranty on the trannies.

The problem is, when honda first put out the Acura TL 5 speed auto tranny, and then later the same on the Accord, they also said they didnt have a problem. People would pop up on the forums saying they had bad trannies, but the dealerships would look at you like you were insane when you asked about it. It wasnt until well into 2002 that Acura admitted they had an issue, and the TL has been out since 99(year 2000 model) with a 5 speed. I had a 2000 TL, ran it for about 50 thousand miles, and never saw an issue. Then traded in for a 02'TLS, and the tranny on that failed around 36K miles. By then we all knew that Acura had issues, but when I showed up at the dealership and said my tranny just went, they still said "really? that's really rare". That's what worries me about Infiniti. The two service people both said that it's a "freak" occurence and they don't see it very often, but how many dealerships will say "oh ye, another one, we see them all the time". Basically, i'm hoping it really was a freak occurence, but i guess time will tell.

The new tranny is working great so far, but so did the first one right up until the day it stopped shifting

Zodiak, people still haven't forgotten about the whole TL fiasco with the bad trannies. If you peruse the other 350z, g35 forums (there are about 7), I can literally count the number of people with auto tranny failures with one hand (with fingers to spare!). Keep in mind that RWD trannies are MUCH more robust than FWD transaxles (due to the limitations of putting everything in the front). I say don't worry about it, you're dealing with Infiniti reliability which rivals even Lexus
