Muffler Smoke

Today when I started the car, I noticed smoke coming out of my muffler. It's the second time that this happened this week. And it happened about 3 seconds after the car was started. I saw a huge cloud on my rear view mirror so I ran back to see what it was and it was coming from the muffler.

Can it be from too much motor oil? I added like 4 quarts of oil this past week because my SES light came on and I didn't want my engine to get ruined cus of lack of oil. The light vanished today, but I'm still thinking there might be too much oil.

Your guys' help is greatly appreciated.

I know my motor has oil consumption issues so once the light came on I knew I needed to add some oil because it did the same thing the last 3,000 miles and after the oil change the light went away.

ok, 1 next time the SES light comes on please check it and see what it says cause it can b something else, (2) 4 quarts in on week is a lot cause too much oil in the engine in not good. what i would do is an oil change drain out all the oil and refill cause u can cause serious damange with too much oill in it.

So you added oil based on a light and not looking at the dipstick?

Yea, Apparently he does not know it exists, and he is asking if their is too much oil.

Pretty simple pull the dipstick(the Yellow Circle on the driver side) and wipe it. Then Put it(ALL THE WAY) back in and pull it out, where is the oil on the dipstick? (Best to do this after 20min or so after the engine has been turned off)

OP next time bring your car to a shop instead of doing things to which you have no idea of what you are doing.

you should add oil when the low oil light comes on and check the engine when the check the engine light comes on. . . or is it the other way around?

Neither, you should add oil when the oil level mark is near L on the dipstick.

If any light comes on because of low oil level your engine is toast.

I checked the dipstick and it looks fine. If the SES light didn't come on because of low oil levels, then why would it disappear once I added some more?

Back to the original question, does anyone know a possible reason why my muffler shot out smoke?

Sounds to me you have no idea, "looks fine"? It either is or isn't. If you cant be certain about the oil level bring it to a shop to get your car looked at.

The SES light can mean a plethora of things, what color is the smoke?

Burning of oil is Blue smoke, black smoke is from too much fuel

Go to Advance Auto or Autozone, even though the light turned off their can still be a code stored.

Also this will help http://lmgtfy.com/?q=black+smoke+when+starting+up

ultimately you should take it to a local mechanic, getting the the code would be a good starting point.
