Need help engine question

I was talking to a friend about putting new rings in a spare VQ35DE non revup he has. Somebody told me that to re-ring a VQ the heads would need to be removed. So my question is is there any truth to that statement? and if so why do the heads need to be removed? I assumed the rotating assembly could come out with removing any topend components other than the timing chain. Somebody help LOL do the heads need to come off to do rings if so why?

Thanks in advance guys

If you mean piston rings then yes the heads have to come off. Is there any particular reason you're going in for just the rings? Once the heads are off it's a good opportunity build up your motor better than new!

I have a bad engine in my g this engine has less than 20k and needs rings my bank at this point doesn't really allow for a build....honestly I look at my g as a bolt on car I don't ever see myself boosting it or looking for high power so stock internals are fine for my goal with this car...I enjoy the car as it is and need it in running condition asap...if I ever wanted to do a build I will have the engine that's in the car now to do that with

Heads must be removed in order to pull and pull the pistons out. I would think it would be impossible to do from under through the crankcase! Think about it.

If oil consumption is a concern, even to an extent, in a non-revup engine, would Maxima pistons and rings be better for oil control and cheaper than Infinitis. The reason I ask is that my '05 Max does not use any oil between 10k mile changes of Amsoil 5w-30. My only uncertaity is- are they interchangeable?
My '06 G take about a quart between changes.

I used amsoil in my VQ and it consumed a bit of oil.
Switched oil to GC synthetic and it stopped consuming oil.

Im sticking to German Castrol syntec from now on.

FYI GC is one of the thickest 5W-30s around, thats why it stopped consuming oil because you went a bit thicker. Thats the reason why, GC is great choice for the VQ

Yup. That and the fact thst it is perfect for the winters here as it reaches 40 below on some days here. Oh and it's a 0w oil and not 5w.
But yeah although amsoil brags higher mileage (25,000 km with their filter)I'll just stick with the GC.
