Do Y pipes make the car louder?

I'm probably getting an ichiba Y pipe for my 05 sedan. Just wondering how much louder it's going to make the car. Don't want it to be really loud. Do you guys think this thing will make my car uncomfortably louder. I don't mind a growling sound but do not want an annoying whine. Can anyone give me any advice?

Also. I've got a friend selling high flow cats soon as well. From what I've heard and read, those are the additions that make the exhaust really loud, well, those and a muffler anyway. Appreciate all the input.

1st. The diameters will not match what is on your car, instead look for an OEM HR Y-Pipe.

2nd. you already made a thread on the same Y pipe, why make another?

3rd. if you're going to go with an aftermarket pipe, then I recommend the m2 or Megan racing since they are designed like the already better flowing HR pipe. The Ichiba is a wider version of the one already on the car, which is why Nissan improved the flow by changing to HR.

I installed my Motordyne XYZ w/ straight pipe on monday. I'm already running ART pipes, and yes it made the car louder. I was running a HR y pipe before. So to more directly answer your question, yes it will make your car louder. But if you are running a entirely OEM exhaust besides the Y pipe, it will not make it unbearable. Especially on a sedan. Good luck!

I have a 2006 Obsidian Black G35 5AT with the sports and premium packages. I currently have the Motordyne 5/16 isothermal plenum spacer, Berk Technology HFC, Ichiba High-Flow Race Y-Pipe and the HKS High-Flow Sports axle back exhaust installed. I do not find my car to be too loud, in fact friends with E60 M5s, E46 M3s and E92 M3s compliment on the sound of my exhaust.

Sounds good. It's only been an hour or so since I installed the pipe. Now I'm looking into which high flow cats and muffler I want. I like the oem look of the stillen sedan exhaust. I just don't want a big over tip muffler. I would like dual exhaust but with the way my bumper is I don't think I could make it work unless they made some sort or rear diffuser that made it look more oem. Any suggestions?

You could always cut a section of the bottom lip to mirror the driver side opening. Berk HFC and a HKS Sport replica would look OEM. Since you want duals you will have to either rotate vertical or relocate the EVAP box on the passenger side. The only other person I have seen fit a muffler on the passenger side of the car was ttrank, other members only run the pipe since there isn't much room. I'm in the process of creating my own custom dual exhaust, replica of the Motordyne shockwave tdx 2.

Got a friend selling high flow cats. May pick them up from him but, I may wait to install them until I get a mid pipe and a better flowing muffler.

Quick question about the coupe mid pipe,( I have a sedan if incase I didn't mention that) does that add hp or just better sound ? I've got the ichiba Y pipe now and I know I'll need some more toward the rear end exhaust to help expell all the spent gases. Would I be better off ordering an axle-back like the stillen and coupe mid pipe or should I not cheap out and get a better exhaust back from the Y back? Also, can someone tell me how much louder I can expect the G
with the high flow cats. My z buddy said they were pretty loud so if thats the case I need to find something else unless there's been a test done to see which high flows are quietest? Thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it.

You will need a 3" midpipe, the coupe is only 2.5" which will create unwanted turbulence/rasp when paired with the Ichiba y pipe. Now that you're on a 3" exit from the merge, you will want to flow that diameter all the way back. A cheap option is Megan Racing, but quality is in question. For muffler the same thing, you will need to find one with a 3" opening for the same reasons.
If you're looking into running dual exhaust, then you might consider a single 3"entry to dual 2.5" exit magnaflow to use as a resonator/midpipe, then run 2.5" pipes to the back on either side.

I have a 2003 sedan with Megan V2 test pipes and Y pipe with a coupe mid pipe. When I changed my Y pipe I literally noticed no difference.

Now when I put on test pipes it was much more noticeable, but ONLY in rpms above 2300. And I would have to put on some engine load for me to hear it. Its gonna smell a little too. OH and your whole exhaust is going to rattle and shake since the test pipes dont make use of the OEM bracket for the cats. The only company I know of right now that uses the bracket is the Berk HFC. With those Im sure it wont rattle.

When I put on my coupe mid pipe it sounded totally different. I can actually hear my car in the lower RPMs and when I got to 2300 it has a nice whaling noise similar to what the coupes have except more mean. IMO for sedans the best bang for buck mod for sound is the mid pipe. Its WAY lighter and has less restriction.

If you want a really loud sound you need to change your muffler. When I took off my muffler it was literally race car loud. So loud that after one day of driving around I reconnected my muffler. I just couldnt stand the noise.

+1

I have a 350Z mid-pipe which my local muffler shop had to extend being that the Z pipe is shorter. Can't be happier with it. I'm still running the stock exhaust on my 03 sedan but the sound has changed dramatically. You will fall in love with windows-down-tunnel-blasting all over again.

I'm looking to get an axle-back pretty soon.. maybe a universal from LaBree motors (which is equivalent to Sebring) or just cheap out with a Magnaflow. Power gains from exhaust mods are minimal.. Depending on what year your car is, I'm sure the factory BHP read has diminished quite a bit. If you just want to whiff by people looking good and sounding nice, just get a middy and an axle-back and call it a day.

I gave my son-in-law the y-pipe off my coupe for his first gen sedan, it sounded much better. Adding the BERK'S HFCs will change the sound and add RWHP. MotorDyne makes one of the best exhaust systems for sedans I've seen, sounds and looks great without having the "fart cannon" look you dislike....don't blame you there!

If you don't want loud, you need to stick with the stock cats.

MD only has one option available for the sedan at this point and I don't know how many Tony has left. he doesn't even list it on the website, I believe it's called the Harikari. And it's LOUD.

The new revised ART pipes from MD have brackets now.

And this is what the MD VQ exhaust with ARTs, a resonated XYZ, and a resonated mid-pipe sounds like, pure sex IMHO but a touch loud:
