I have a 2004 x with 104k~ miles, got it about 4 months ago, and not long after the SES light came on and came with 0430, which is the bank 2 cat converter. I called up Infiniti, the part is about $850 + tax. I have failed emissions, after I cleared the light they detected it, so I have until Dec. 21st to figure out what to do. Car runs fine.

Talked to mechanic, said he can waiver it here in Maryland for $450, can do a tune up and write it off for the waiver.

Anyone have any suggestions to whether I can just buy a whole new exhaust, go with the converter, or some other option? or fall back to the waiver.

 

Borrow the cat from another G/Z for the test, and then get a new exhaust with HFC.

 

Don't you have the 'ghettos' in Maryland? Here in NY we have guys who will give you the inspection sticker (at a higher price of course) if you have a car that won't pass the test. I don't know how they do it but used to get it done to my old beater. Had to pay like $75-100 instead of the regular $40 but it was worth spending that than getting the entire part fixed

I have had a factory cat go out and the same type code come up, turned out the car had small misfire that burned up the cat, the ecu never threw a code for that one cylinder misfire. Eventually I had a shop watch the car on a scan tool while it was running to discover the misfire instead of just pulling the codes.

If I were to replace the cat without fixing the misfire I would have burned up the new cat eventually. I never knew there was a random misfire, it was on a V8 though.
