Worth fixing prior to trade in?
Worth fixing prior to trade in?
So My 2003 G35 Sedan has the CDs stuck in the radio and chooses when it will and willl not provide sound via the radio. I would like to trade it in for non-infiniti....is it worth fixing before I trade it in or will they just deduct a standard amount for doing it theirselves? Or is this a deal breaker? I was quaoted $60-$600 for the repair.
Thanks,

That's about the widest quote I've ever heard! I'd just buy aftermarket, never heard of a trade in, I'm sure they're not giving you anything for it for trade anyways whether it works or not. I wouldn't bother fixing it that kind of defeats the purpose doesnt it?
I think he's trading the car, not just the radio.

Your decyphering skills are better than mine. I thought trade in on a radio made no sense..... but in my defense, it was a little confusing.....
either way I agree with everyones posts, not worth it.

DO NOT spend a dime before you trade it in! This applies to ANY dealer!
I have sold cars at 4 dealerships. (Thankfully I work in the tech industry now... I sucked as a salesman anyhow.) I have also bought over 20 cars in my lifetime. (Helping others with the purchase since most people seem to get ripped off.)
They are going to low ball you for your trade anyway. If you want more for your trade [read “closer to what it is worth”] you will have to go through heckling process.
Look at it as a math equation. They are going to give you a [most likely low] % of what your car is worth. Even if you do talk them up, which you should ALWAYS do, you are still only getting a percentage return.
If they notice and attempt to use it to devalue your trade in, your return objection [to overcome theirs] is that no trade is perfect. That is why KBB and every other 'market/trade/private party/etc' value system list more than one 'condition' for cars.
If this does not convince you, or you still have questions, PM me. I will go through the whole process of explaining dealerships, how they come up with their prices, what their excuses [lies] will be, etc. PLEASE REMEMBER their job is to overcome your objections. They are good at this, you need to come armed with MORE information then they are prepared/able to overcome.
If you do YOUR job, the car deal should come down to them making as little money as possible (on front and back half). You should be forcing them to understand their only option is take a small percentage of wanted gross or 100% of nothing. BE WILLING TO WALK AWAY AND NEVER RETURN - that attitude will get you the best deal.

Don't even mention it while they are looking over the car! Turn the radio off at all times, they will probably just take a quick look at it anyway or just put it on a lift to check the underneath.
