Code Reader Error?

Okay. So the "service engine soon" light on my 05 G turned on about 2 weeks ago. I took it to a mechanic and he read the codes. There were 4 there. I was an idiot and didn't write them down because I was in a rush. Then, I decided to go to auto zone and do it myself for free. When I plugged in the Actron OBD II Global Autoscanner CP9175, It gave me an error message. I think it said "couldn't communicate with vehicle" or something like that. What does this mean? How can i get the codes?

Well that depends. Did you turn the key fully forward short of starting the car? If not, the ECU wasn't on fully. Not trying to challenge your intelligence. But some don't know that's what needs to be done. I have had some vehicles act a fool when trying to read codes. My Outlook does that once in awhile. It could be the scanner is on its way out. Hard to tell. You know someone with a scanner? Try them or go to another store and use their scanner.
