2005 sedan base speaker replacement / door panel removal

Hi All,

Frustrated that I couldn't find anything online or at crutchfield.com about which speakers fit my car, I decided to take the doors apart and photograph the speakers on my base (non-bose) 2005 sedan. The 4 midbase woofers in the bottoms of the doors are all the same: they are Panasonic, 4 ohm, max 40 watts, and approximately 6.5". I'm not sure what to make of them because they're not at all like aftermarket speakers...they were made specifically for the G35. There's an approxamately 1" high plastic ring that is integrated into the speaker frame and magnet/driver, and the foam surround of the speaker is glued to the top of this ring. The ring exists, in my opinion, to prevent the speaker from hitting the windows when they are rolled down - the clearance from the inner metal frame of the door to the glass is about 2.5-3" in the front doors and about 2.25" in the rear doors. Thus, the 1" plastic ring adds an inch of clearance to the speakers from the glass. If you can find some shallow speakers, you could mount those to the door frame, but anything else needs some kind of plastic ring to give the speaker more clearance. So, the choices are...use the stock speakers as mounts after you rip the insides out of them, or buy some aftermarket 1" high mounting rings. I think either way would work, and either way, you'd have to do some drilling. I'm going to order parts today, and I'll let everyone know how it goes. I' m hoping that aftermarket rings will be able to bridge the approx. 5.5" hole in the metal frame of the door. I'll post pictures of the scary Panasonic things. Let me know if anyone has tackled this project.

Here are websites I found useful:

You should have no problem using any 6.5" component set of your choice for the front doors, and any 6.5" coaxial set for the rear. I used MB Quart 218.61 (similar to the new model QSD) in the front, and MB Quart PCE 216 in the rear in my 2004 sedan. I threw out the stock speaker mounting things, and mounted the MB's right to the doors, using the mounting rings that came with them. I needed to modify the oval door holes very slightly for clearance, and drill new holes for the mounting screws. We are not talking any serious metal work here....well within the realm of the DIYer. BTW, I would highly recommend the MB Quart speakers. After about 10 months use, I still love the sound. A pair of QSD's and a pair of PCE's will probably set you back about $800 if you shop around. You get what you pay for when it comes to component sets.

Jason-

Is the head unit the same for both base and Bose? I've read that the Alpine V12 amp is a nice 5-channel amp for 4 speakers plus a sub. Good luck and thanks in advance for any tips you learn.
