G35 AT flush or drain and refill?

My G35 sedan is approaching 100k miles and i am confused which AT service to do.

I read many threads here, but most are inconclusive as to which one should get - A flush or a drain and refill. Most recommend doing just a drain and refill, but the owner at Midas said, it will flush only 5 quarts while the other 10 quarts inside other components will remain thereby defeating the purpose of a new fluid inside AT.

Infiniti service center quotes $125 for drain and refill. Their flush is $400. So flush here is a no-no.

Midas doesn't do drain and refill but they do Flush for $130. They use Matic-J as told by the owner of midas. They are not willing to take fluid brought by me.

I am leaning towards doing a flush by Midas but i am unsure of results. And since this deals with AT, i don't want to take risk.

Please help me decide.

as a DIY, we like drain and fills.

Its easier and less chances of issues. I dont recommend anyone do a flush. Your first drain and fill, should get your 40% new fluid. Some follow that up with a 2nd drain and fill in 500-1000miles. That should get you like 55-65% new fluid.

Matic-J or S is what nissan wants you to use. Castrol provides nissan with the ATF. You can get castrol import fluid from advance auto in the $5-6 range. Its just like an oil change but using ATF.

that's how i do it. Started at 60k and every 25k~30k (2.5 years or so) since...

but i think it's just a preference

Thanks guys for quick replies. I guess i will do the drain and refill. I asked infiniti service if they will also pull the lines that go to the cooler inside the radiator. The adviser said no. They will just remove the drain plug and drain it completely. Once its done they will fill with new ATF. I guess that would all be required.

Hope to do it every 30k from now. I doubt if previous owner did anytime. So this will be first time and since AT is very important part of a car, i don't wanna mess with it.

Either do the work yourself, if you have the space and time.

Or find a local gear head to do this. I dont know your location to recommend you someone. Dont pay the dealership to do such task like a ATF fluid exchange, unless you need it for warranty purposes.

its literally a drain plug and 10mm bolt on top to get to fill neck. Cost is up in the air.

Dealership has Matic-S ATF anywhere from $10-15 a bottle, you need 4-5 bottles. So it can be done for under $100. You can go on ebay and get Matic S for maybe less. Or use what I use and get castrol import ATF for $6.29 a bottle and it works for our G35's

Op, If you want to get a 90%+ change in fluid, you can drain and fill, driver the car to circulate the fluid. 5-10 minutes to get it up to normal operating temp. Do this 3 more times and you will have replaced about 90%+ of the fluid. Basically drain and fill 4 times. Honda strictly prohibits a flush on their trans to maintain warranty and recommends the above procedure.

Do you happen to know how many bottles that will take?

Approximately 4 quarts each time, so 16 quarts. If yours has never been changed before it might not be a good idea to change all at once. Your current trans fluid has wear material in it and the clutch packs are used to using it for friction. I would do 2 at most and then change it out at each oil change.

This looks like a good deal:

for 125 for 5 quarts drain and fill at the dealer isnt too bad of price. The Fluid exchange is a rip, should be 11 quarts (dealer price) + 30min of labor. 110+75.....

I would only use Matic-S. If Midas says they are using Matic-J Id steer far away. Matic-J is no longer being made since 2009, so most likely they are using the cheapest fluid that says its compatible with that fluid.

from my experience dont do the flush!!!!
I did the flush at the infiniti dealership and my transmission went bad within 500miles. I did the flush when the car had around 72k miles and i never had the transmission oil changed b4 that.
I had to get my transmission rebuild which cost me around 3k$.
Just stick with the drain and fill.
