A few questions about the G35!

Hi all, I want to buy a manual transmission sedan that has some oomph. I figured a G35 would do nicely.

I don't commute far, so a used G35 should be fine. I was looking at the 05/06's but I had a few questions:
1) How much do the 6MT sedans from the 05/06 years actually sell for? The dealers here are well above Edmunds, but I don't know how much wiggle room they're adding in.

2) How reliable are the 05/06's? I don't know my way around a car, so I don't want to find out the hard way I bought a car that has a history of issues.

3) Where's the best place to find one? I can't post in the marketplace here yet, and autotrader has barely any manuals in my area.

4) Is there a difference between the 05's and 06's?

5) Are the G37's (07+) worth the extra $ at all? I feel like it's a big step up in price for not that much more car. I figured the 05/06's were the best bang for the buck.

Thanks gents/gentiles!

Clutch slave cylinder, oil consumption, compression rods, valve cover leaks etc. Great cars, but high maintenance.

The search button and Craigslist will have the exact answers your looking for. Just search all over your state then in all the big cities to get pricing idea

Yea, I'd just get a nice acura or something. Little easier to get around IMO.

1. This entirely depends on where you are located, what the condition of the car is in, how many miles, options, year. It's hard to put a number on them with so many variables but a ballpark of 11-17k probably.

2. The G35 is a pretty reliable car if taken care of (kind of like any other car). If you get a mt in an 05/06 you do have to be a little more cautious about the oil consumption issue, however all of the vq motors are prone to it.

3. Craigslist/Autotrader/Cars.com/etc. The manuals are very hard to find. I looked for a long time for mine and traveled to get it. However, I am very picky.

4. This im not entirely sure about. I believe I have read that there are some slight differences between them but they are miniscule.

5. It depends on what you can find them for. If it was a couple thousand more to get into an 07vs06 with similar mileage, and you like the styling of the 2nd gen. I would spend the extra.

Look at the next post, those are the majority of the common problems.

07/08 sedans are still G35s, but the styling is more similar to the 37's. '09+ is when sedans changed to the G37. Just a heads up if you're looking at those.

Thanks for the tips. Is there a 'fix' for the oil consumption issues?

So then what can be done about it other than rebuilding it? Just refill it with oil more frequently and all is well?

Pretty much, just have to keep on top of checking your oil. I believe a lot of the times, or the big culprit to at least the rev-up motors burning oil is the piston rings. On the other motors i'm not 100% sure what the usual reason is.

I heard from forum members about using thicker oil stopped the engine from burning oil. But I would stay away from the G bud. Save yourself the headache.

If you were mechanically inclined, id say the G would be perfect. Its not very difficult to work on at all. But there are numerous issues that plague all models. Most are listed above. If your decision is between 06/07, spend the cash and get the 07. From a reliability standpoint, id say it has LESS (severe) issues. But it does have its own unique set.
