Need to program new key fob

I have a 2006 g35 sedan with the intelligent key system. The car also has one transponder key that I would like to add a key fob to. I have read conflicting things online whether I can program the fob myself or if the dealer must do this for me. Has anyone had success programming a key fob on a car with the smart key system?

Yes. It is easy. Get in the car and shut and lock the door. Insert your key into the ignition fully and retract fully six or more times in ten seconds. Both flashers will blink twice, erasing the fob. Reinsert the key and turn to ACC. Within 5 seconds hit any button on the first fob. The flashers should flash if it took. If you have a second fob, unlock and relock the door manually again and hit a button on the second fob. The flashers should flash again and the fobs are programmed. Turn ignition to off and remove key. Try fobs.

Have you done this with a car with a smart key? I tried that method and the car won't go into learn mode. I am not sure if it can be done with the smart key system, that's what I am trying to confirm.

I did mine with a new fob and new transponder key. Now both the old ones and new ones work. You have to do the key insert/remove thing just right. All the way in, all the way out, not too fast or too slow.

I had my new key programmed at a locksmith. The dealer does it too for about $50. I think you need a special device. The fob is easy.
