I recently inherited my dad's 06 G35x sedan and i am interested in aftermarket performance and exterior parts. I'm 18 and this is my first car so im basically wondering how i should get started with performance mods? any basic and general advice would be great! thanks!

 

Get a coupe midpipe. It won't do anything for performance but will make it sound much more mean, in fact I think it sounds better than the complete coupe exhaust. Can you post some pics so we can see it?

 

I'll try to get some pics up by the end of the day because its pouring rain right now, but i was also looking into converting the exhausts into duals like the coupe, have you seen this done before/which do you think would be better?

 

As far as I know that's very difficult to do because the gas tank is in the way or something and the bumper wouldn't allow it either. Spending a lot on exhaust is a waste IMO because you can make it sound just as good by swapping out single pieces such as the midpipe. If you need a new catback, look at a Megan system. They're very affordable, sound great and you can get real ones on eBay.

How many Miles and what condition?

My personal advice? sell it and get a econobox, play with that. Once you learn the basics about modding, how to drive, maintain a car, etc, get back into a G and do it right.

I am very against a G35 as a first car though, i think it's very silly.

If you insist on keeping it and obviously, you will (I would at your age), I'd recommend you leave it alone for a bit, and just get a feel for thecar. After about a week to a month you'l lhave a feeling on something you might want to change, and go after that. In that time, do a bunch of reading on here about common mods, pricing, etc. You'll find some very simple bolt on stuff that makes a big difference, but it's also easy to throw a lot of money away on mods, and there's a lot of tasteless mods out there too.

In addition, this car is bad on gas so unless your parents are throwing money at you or paying all your insurance and maintenence costs, you should be saving your pennies or you won't be able to put gas in the car to drive it.

 

my dad works for exxon so gas isnt a problem haha but it has 64k miles on it and my dad has taken great care of it. I've also been thinking of keeping it as-is and then when im out of college and ready to buy a newer car then by a G then and start there with aftermarket parts and mods and such

 

If it only has 64k on it I wouldn't be worried about modding it then. Keep it in good shape thought that's #1

That car is worth doing something to from the sound of it. Just keep it clean no cheap ricey stuff. Save your dough and put on quality mods, you won't regret it. check out SDgenius, CandlestickPark, 4dgs, and many other's cars in the Media share section to get an idea of what clean modding looks like.

 

Welcome to the G community. If you want to free up some Hp get some pulleys. I am looking into that right now.

 

I forgot to mention to do all the maintenance if it hasn't been done. Do a transmission flush, change the differential fluids, power steering fluid, brake fluid and coolant. Also change the cabin air filter and the air filter.

When modding you need to be aware that you have a G35x. It can kinda be a pain sometimes because the X platform isn't always compatible with the mods you are trying to do. Especially with exhaust systems due to the location of the transfer case on the G35x. Before doing mods, always make sure that it will be able to fit. Check out these G35x specific threads:
