Got the 5AT after driving only sticks for the past 20 years. It has been quite an adjustment but I am getting used to it. Clearly sticks are more fun but the auto in this car is very good. The realities of commuting, hauling the kids and heavy traffic on a regular basis just made the auto more practical and made the stick seem like kind of a waste.

However, I am already contemplating how I can justify a two seat roadster for the weekends and other times when a stick would be lots of fun. Perhaps a Miata that is a few years old would do the trick and give me my stick fix. Hmmm, if I can just convince the wife.

Had to get an auto because my fiancee will be driving it most of the time. If it were just mine I would have gotten a 6MT. However I have to say I like the G35 AT. It seems to me to be pretty aggressive with downshifting and getting you into the power band.

If you have to ask or take a survey for your answer - Get the 5AT. 6MT people already know.

auto vs man trans

Several cars ago, I had a 94 Cobra with a 5 sp man. Ther precision and feel of the shifter was a never ending thrill. Between the sound of the stock pipes and the click and feel of the shifter, I enjoyed driving. Except, the car did not handle worth a damn, even lowered. And, it only had 240 stock horses, less than my 04 G35. The AT in the G35 shifts quickly, it is very aggressive. Since I am on I95 in the crowded state of Fla, I figured an auto stick (triptronic) would be better. Would I enjoy the 6 sp man. ..you bet. But when I am driving, drinking coffee and talking on the cell(using me ear bud) I am glad the AT is in my car. We all enjoy different things. The one thing we have in common is that we love,....our G's.

And, my thanks to our webmasters, administrators and owners of this site. I always enjoy coming home from work and viewing these forums.

I love stick shifts and hope to drive them till the very end. The trafffic in my part of the world is only occasionally in gridlock -- so there is little incentive to move to automatics. Everybody in my family drives stick and loves it. I think it is essential for people to learn to drive stick shifts even if they chose later on in life to choose automatics. I tend to think you acquire good driving habits (most of all paying attention to what you are doing) driving an MT which will stand you in good stead even if you switch to autos later. It is too bad high schools no longer teach kids how to drive an MT car -- I had to coach both my kids later. My 2c.

I asked, but why the hell would I get an AT when I don't like it?

I find auto less work and almost as much fun as the standard.
There was a time I'd only have the standard, but now I like the automatic as much.
Depends on your taste and utility.

I understand the excitment and purity involved with owning and driving a manual transmission. I've owned both, and yes, driving a manual does involve the driver more in the driving experience. For me it was fun to drive a manual car for a month or so then it just got old and tedious. It's automatics for me from now on!

25% of the time, I'd love to drive a stick.

It's that other 75% I worry about.

Glad you enjoy our site so much. It is a lot of fun and informative too.

I had a '94 GT back a few rides ago too, and after many mods to get it to GO, I loved it.
Some fond memories with that ride.
