Gas Gauge

Has anyone have had problems with thier gas gauge not going up all the way after a fill up? Just today I topped off my gas tank and when I get in the car and turn the key, the gauge does not go up all the way. I even gave it 6 miles to adjust and nothing. I know its full because I over filled.

Mine has worked great so far. I have heard of gauge problems and problems with very slow fill-up on some 04, and 03, but my 05 has been great.

I had and still have the same problem as you except now its reversed, the gauge goes above the fill line.
I had it taken in for your exact issue and they swapped out the gas censor. I still need to take it back to have it swapped out again. Its pretty annoying.........I mean, is it that hard to get this right?

So, take it to the dealer as its covered under warranty.........good luck

I don't think it's unusual. I had mine replaced this summer.

Gas gauges are rarely calibrated so that they just read full when the tank is full. My needle doesn't move down from "Full" until I've driven about 25 miles, so the 1st quarter tank is usually "bigger" than the middle 2 quarters of the tank.

It's more irritating when the tank is full and the needle never goes all the way to the top, as happened with my E320.

Great thanks guys. Off to the dealer it goes. For those of you who have brought it in, how long does it take? Im asking only because they are low on "loaners" and I dont wanna get stuck there. Oh I should have them fix my "rocking chair" too then huh.

This is a common issue that I have experienced too.
At the moment, my gauge is reading fine, but for a few months back in the summer it didn't go to the top.
The problem is with our sending units in the tank, which can be replaced to fix the problem.
Talk to your dealer and tell him if it doesn't improve, you'd like a new s/unit under warranty.

My Gsedan was doing fine before, but now when i fill up the gas...it wont go to the top. I drive for a while then it slowly come back up again =_=
This is not a big issue for me, because i know full tank=400km. So ill just live with it and change it before the warrenty goes off. Just dont wanna stay at the dealer and wait on their sofa. They should put up internet at the dealer...

There are some people who say the problem is related to the sensor, and others claim the problem is related to the gas tank itself.

I personally think the gas tank is to blame, as countless times I've filled mine up to have it click off (thinking it's full) when there's at least 10 more gallons in there. There have been a handful of people who have received new gas tanks under warranty. If your problems are reproducable and seriously annoying, complain to the dealer.

That's a good point BrianV. The sensor could be at fault and also it may be a faulty valve at the bottom of the filler neck which may restrict filling the tank.
I had this happen on a Contour of mine once which was fixed by replacing the valve.

Mine used to do the same thing. I ran a couple of tanks with some gas treatment and it returned to normal. I think the gas treatment cleaned off whatever was preventing the sensor to give an accurate reading.

I had a similar problem where my gas gauge stopped before the "F". It actually was my fault - I had turned on the key to the "on" position (without starting the car) to get the mileage while I was filling it up. The needle went up to where the gas tank was at at that moment and then stopped even though I was still pumping gas. I had to turn the key off before starting the car to get it to read correctly.

So for those that think its the gas tank that is causing this problem (shutting off before you reach a full tank), how do you explain the gas gauge doing beyond the "F" full limit? Both the tank and the sending unit?

Well a properly working gas guage and tank SHOULD go above 'F' if the car is topped off. Every car I've owned has had the needle got past F if it's completely full (like a couple mm over the F bar). If it's shooting way up to 12 o'clock then there's a problem, but if it's slightly over 'F' when full then I'd say it's working properly. Mine currently goes to the very start of the 'F' bar, even when it's overflowing for gas; this is not typical.
