Wheel coating chipping off (05 G35x)...

Anyone else notice their wheel coating starting to chip off? A couple of my wheels have started and it doesn't seem like they plan to stop anytime soon. I drive my car year round in the Ohio winters which I assume may have caused or at the very least is not helping my problem. Currently its just the silver metallic paint chipping off. Some areas are getting as large as silver dollar. There is a black under coating that still remains though.

Has anyone else seen this? Has anyone else done anything to repair or stop this? Hate to sink a bunch of money in refinishing all the wheels. Thanks in advance.

When I first got my car last year I noticed that the wheels were stained. I tried cleaning it and I eventually sanded it down to the black since nothing would take it off. I did a DIY paint job on all fours and it looks alright now but definitely not factory fresh. The OEM paint is just too thin and doesn't last. Mine is a 2005 too.

No issues here, but the paint on my rims was very rough, almost sandpaper-like when I bought my car. I spent a weekend sanding them down and painted them with rattlecan paint. Storm metallic grey, a color GM uses for the Corvette.

They turned out alright, but need to be refinished. I would suggest trying sanding/priming/painting yourself over paying a ton of money to get them repainted. For what you'll pay to have them repainted, I bet you could buy a whole new set of rims.

It's probably a combination of things, like the weather conditions and whatnot. I haven't seen too many just chipping but the weather is a bit more consistent here in Southern California. Refinishing them shouldn't be too much, and if you choose to powder coat all four, you can bet that the finish will hold up much better than a standard painted finish (assuming it is taken care of).

My 06 17's were doing the same and it makes me crazy.
I've looked into PC my wheels too. The shop wanted them for a week, w/o tires and it was $100 each. That was just crazy for me and the stock 17s. I've considered stripping, priming and spraying them myself and may do so. For now I'm on coupe 19s so it can wait.

^$100 per wheel isn't too bad for a finish that will hold up pretty well over time. DIY paint jobs can turn out nice but I've heard many cases where the paint just flakes off after a while.
