Before and after shots. Looks much better. I'm going to see how this holds up for the next month before I paint the fronts. I'm thinking I should have done more of the area that butts up to the rim.....but you can't see that part.

Nice work. You did what you had to do! Nowadays I take the time to tape off the swept area leaving enough overlap for the paint on the rotor hat for the pad to wipe a little off. I do several coats on both sides of the rotor and even on the vented side. The challenge is getting it to stick evenly! But after all that time spent you'll be glad you did. It's been years and still no unsightly rust spots! Here's another tip, if you ever have to repack or regrease your pads, don't hit the rotor with brake cleaner or it will ruin the paint. I'd like to find out what Nissan/Infiniti or Lexus coats their rotors with. They seem to be baked on and unaffected by chemicals...

That is normal, and unfortunately the pad does not sweep the entire area of the rotor outside the hat, it leaves about a 3/8" unswept band around the hat. So even coated rotors can rust.

I painted mine with high temp paint and only painted around the hat. If I were to do it again, I'd just overspray onto the swept area and let the pads take off any overspray.

An easier process would be to apply a rust converter which change the rust into a black coating and you can paint right over the coating. I have done it on other rusted surfaces around the house.
