Question NEED HELP! Strange noise

Dont know if this has been discussed on here before (saw something a few weeks ago about a knocking noise but sounds different) but after turning on the engine, warming it up and going into drive (<5mph) after coming out of reverse, I hear what sounds like something being engaged in the engine compartment . It happens everytime where I hear a hard knock followed by a series of low clicks (5 to 6 clicks) and it only happens when I come out of reverse and slightly push down on the gas. Does anyone have any ideas about where the noise might be coming from. Its an 04 with only 2400 miles on it.

Also interested as to when the other sedan owners in here got their first oil change (mileage) just so I know when I should schedule one (also have them check the noise problem).

It's probably the ABS system check.

I have this noise as well. I think it's the ABS. The Owner's Manual mentions something about this as well.

is your car a x by any chance, becasue if it is the sound would be the allwheel drive system engaging because i dont think its on in reverse.

i got my first oil change at 4500 miles.

I will have to listen for this I have never noticed any noise like that from the ABS except if it kicks in when stopping on ice the odd time.
I am familiar with the awd noises but not that.

Xman, you say it does it regular when you are just taking off, and it is some sort of ABS system check?

Yes, that is what he is referring to, it's almost like a slight air brake type sound.

Wayne, on my Coupe, and as I remember on my Sedan, that ABS self test noise happened only once per day for me after initial cold start up and after engaging the transmission, just as you reach 3 or 4 kph (in forward or reverse).
When I hear mine it sounds like it's coming from about the base of the steering wheel.
The insulation may be better in newer G's now, so hearing it may be more difficult. (either that or your hearing aid is off-- )

What did you say? I can't hear you. Thanks Colin , hehe, whats this stuff about hearing aids, There are more senior members around than me. Tomorrow when I take my better half to work, I will shut down the tunes on start-up, and we will both listen for this.

RATS.... I forgot to listen for this abs noise this morning at start-up.
I realized I probably have not heard it yet cause it has been so darn cold since we got the G (Dec.7th) and the heating system and fans are always going full blast first thing at start-up. So my hearing is OK.

Oh, and ABQ_35 I just turned 56 years young a couple of weaks ago.

I can only speculate to the noise since my G has yet to arrive...and it's killinG me. Any how while I've been waitinG I have down loaded the owners manual...here is what it has to say about the ABS system and its self diaGnostic test that it performs at low speed. If you happen to have your foot on the brake pedal while self test is occuring you will probably feel some feed back through the brake pedal.

Normal operation
Self-test feature
The anti-lock brake system consists of
electronic sensors,electric pumps,and
hydraulic solenoids controlled by a com-
puter.The computer has a built-in diag-
nostic feature that tests the system each
time you start the engine and move the
vehicle at a low speed in forward or re-
verse.When the self-test occurs,you may
hear a clunk noise and/or feel a pulsation
in the brake pedal. This is normal and is
not an indication of any malfunction.

I fear your problem is not the ABS system checking itself ,but I'm more inclined to think it's the actuator on the auto5 not making the smooth transition from reverse to drive without ratcheting slightly. NOT TO WORRY ...If I'm not mistaken it's a computer activated adjustment that the dealer can do in minutes (after he confirms that I'm right and not smoking crack). Even if it's done via linkage...still a quick fix. So turn that frown upside down Sparky JBX
