2005 G35 X Sedan: My gas tank was at 1/4 full so I went to fill it up and it would only take 5 gallons or so. Fuel guage is working because it registered when the 5 gallons went in. It won't take any more gas. Anyone know what this could be? Gas attendant said maybe an air lock?
Any help would be appreciated.

I've had that happen to my 05 X as well, but it was just a one time thing and the sensitive gas nozzle's fault. If it happens every time you're filling up, it may be a dent in your fuel tank, though I'm not sure how plausible that is in a G. If you haven't already, try again at a different pump some time, or another gas station altogether maybe.

I have the same issue occasionally, it seems to happen at select gas stations and not very often. Luv ya, mean it!!

 

Ha ha! Guess what? My car filled right up at my "regular" gas station! No problemo. Tim, I was gonna aak you offline but missed this board. Thanks everyone! Hope that was a one time fluke!!

 

When this happens, just start the car, move to a different pump, and it will work fine. 100% of the time. Sometimes I can put several gallons in before it happens and sometimes it happens immediately. But in all cases, if I start the car and move to a different pump it always works. I've had the TSB done .. twice. This rarely happens to me and I think it is outside-temperature dependent, but just starting the car and going to a different pump always solves it. Hope it does for you too.

 

No worries, I feel bad I haven't asked you about the G in a while. I guess the recent events in Boston clouded my manners. Glad it was a minor issue and not a serious one. Talk to you soon, don't be a stranger on here you know what I mean.

 

This happens to me once or twice a year as well. Like others have mentioned, it normally resolves itself when you change stations/gas pumps. Fairly common. In fact, it just happen two days ago at Costco. I went back today and it the problem was resolved. Magic?

 

Here's the solution to this problem.

1) dont insert the gas nozzle all the way into the car when filling up.
In fact, insert it so far so that it is jsut 0.5-1 inch away from the opening of the gas tank hole.
this will allow less fuel pressure to build up when pumping gas.

2) when filling gas ONLY use the lowest spot on the gas nozzle handle to pump gas "hands free"

Hope this makes sense. Ive had the same issues before and in my experience the following steps ensure i can always fill the gas tank from E to F in one go.
