Cold Air Intake

Cold Air Intake
Just bought my ’03 G35 and I’m loving it. I want to put a cold air intake but the dealer told me that if I put a cold air intake or just replace the filter to a K&N filter the check engine light will come on. Is that true?
Also since I live in Colorado where it’s snows or rain. I’m worried about putting the cold air intake and I was thinking putting the pop-charger or the Stillen hi-flow airbox, what will be the best? What kind of horsepower gain I will get from them? Any other recommendation?
Thanks

No.
The oem intake system IS a cold air intake, NO other system or CAI pulls in air that is colder when factually measured at the MAF sensor. In fact the popcharger was shown to bring in air that is +10 degree's higher then the oem intake does. Only buy a intake because you wish to hear the sound it makes.

You got the typical dealer response. They don't want you to change anything on the car and, if they had their way, would only want you to use geniune Nissan parts (down to the air you put in your tires -- okay, that's extreme).
I have never had a problem with any CELs (check engine lights) coming on in any car where I've added an aftermarket intake or filter. That includes:
- '87 Accord LXi with K&N drop-in filter: 190K+ miles with filter
- '96 Grand Cherokee w/K&N Gen II FIPK intake: 100K+ miles with the intake
- '00 S2000 with JR drop-in filter (similar to a K&N panel filter): 20K+ miles with filter
- '03 G35 with Stillen intake/Z-tube: 12K+ miles with combo
- '04 G35 with Stillen intake/Z-tube: 5K+ miles with combo
By the way, the Stillen/Z-tube combo is a great setup. I'm not really sure of the power gains but the car does seem to pull stronger at highway speeds. And the sound...oh so nice.

I put the Stillen HiFlow AirBox on mine 30K miles ago and have never had the
CEL come on because of it. Don't listen to the BS these guys shovel out.
You will learn more about your G right here on this forum than you ever
would from the dealer.

I have an AEM intake, one of the "full length" intakes (as opposed to the "stubby's" as I call them)
Fitted it myself in about an hour and a half, followed the instructions and have never had a check engine light not any other problems. My dealer doesn't seem to have a problem with it either.

False. The Stillen Intake system and stock brings in colder air than any other system. Especially if you put some heat wrap around the tubing. Dave O has done extensive tests which were MEASURED at the MAF of major temperature drops. The JWT intake or other pop charger ones do not have a good enough heatshield to block the heat. Stillens does.

Read the data again.

DaveO & Alagolfer's test results.
STILLEN CAI & 350Z AIR DUCT - Insulated
Air Intake System: Stillen CAI w/Popcharger air filter & Z-tube - System, including MAS Air Flow sensor, is fully insulated.
Ambient Temp (dash readout): 98F
Intake Air Temp @ 60mph: 107-109F
equals +9/+11 to ambiant
STOCK AIR CASE & 350Z AIR DUCT - Insulated
Ambient Temp (dash readout): 86F
Intake Air Temp @ 60mph: 96F -100F
eqauls +10/+14 to ambiant

"K&N 350Z TYPHOON - Modified & Insulated"
Test with air box lid being re-installed (full ram air system).
Ambient Temp (dash readout): 99F
.3 miles - 107F air temp
8.6 miles - 102F
equals +3/+8 to ambiant
Next day tests.
Ambient Temp (dash readout): 100F - 101F
8 mile pre-test trip - 107F air temp
equals +6/+7 to ambiant
I and a 350Z owner on my350Z.com with a hybraid Injen that draws from below the license place, have the lowest known recorded intake temps to ambiant. Means absolutely nothing since it takes a 10 degree drop for a whole 1% gain in power.

Injen sucks monkey *****... I'd stick with Stillen or AEM/NISMO.... Everytime I've gone with Injen or friends have, they have had nothing but problems. The lastest was with my newphews Altima. He put a Injen CAI and he started having problems when the RPM's got up to 5000. The car would start to stall... Was the weirdest thing... Anyways we replaced it witha Nismo and everthing is working right again... STAY AWAY form Injen crap... Just my opinion based on problems i've had with them.
