2006 G35X Speedometer stopped working.
2006 G35X Speedometer stopped working.
All:
Last week I took my 2006 G35X to the dealer to look at my air bag light (supplemental restraint warning light) which had come on on the dash. They replaced my "spiral cable" ($286) and that fixed the problem.
On the way home from the dealer my speedometer stopped working! It lazily moved up to 120 mph and then slowly moved around to point straight down, and stayed there. I took the car back in, and now they tell me I need a new instrument cluster, $771. They say the speedometer problem is not related to the spiral cable. I have a "burn on the circuit board".
Has anyone else had a speedometer problem? What do you think? Is there anything else that I can do (refurbished part, non-dealer mechanic). There is a complication in that the dealer tells me that the instrument cluster contains the odometer, which by law must be reset on the new instrument cluster to match my actual current mileage, and that MUST be done by the parts supplier. You can't just get one from a junk yard and replace yours (which is a lot of work apparently).

so ur resell value doesnt get freaked up id suggest have the dealer take care of it so they can set the correct mileage. nothings scares a buyer more than knowing the owner changed the odo cluster himself
I settled with my dealer for I pay 1/2 he pays 1/2. I called "Infiniti Consumer Affairs", 800/662-6200 x7. So I will get the job done for $400, which is okay with me. It's a funny coincidence that the speedometer broke while they were fixing the spiral cable, but I can't prove that it was their fault.

Point in both your favor IMHO. Electrical is so hard to diagnose and track down in best of cases. Given proximity of work and difficulty to prove cause and effect, down the middle agreement really seems fair to you and goodwill gesture by Infiniti/dealer.
Curious: did dealer offer deal or was it call to Infiniti that brought them to table for agreement?

The call to Infiniti brought them to the table. I made the deal to Infiniti Customer Care. In retrospect, I should have bid lower - the dealer agreed right away! Nonetheless, I'm happy.
