Extended Warranty ?

When I bought my car the dealer tried to sell me an extended warranty. I refused. I bought one once 10 years ago (for some $1500) on a Honda Accord and never used it. Now, however, my 2006 G35X with 75K miles is having MANY electrical problems: spiral cable, LED high-mount brake light, right rear tail-light assembly replacement (another LED), speedometer. The new G37X extended warrantly is like $3800. What's the bottom line on these: Are they desirable, or is the Infiniti G series just not reliable?

Buying a warranty from Nissan is a good idea especially with a used car! Don't even consider other aftermarket warrantys, they're a scam.

I, to, had the option of buying an extended warranty when I bought my car 4 years ago and glad I didn't. I have put almost 70K miles on my car in that time (currently at 115K) and have spent less than $500 on repairs other than routine maintenance.

The G is one of the more reliable used cars out there, but there will always be owners that have more issues with their cars than the majority of the rest of us. It sounds like you might be a good candidate for one sorry to say.

I turned mine down, BUT should I get another Nissan / Infiniti I WILL get one. These cars are becoming more packed with features and yes, more sensors so I think it'll be wise to get one. Luckily on my G, I put 80k before I had to give it attention. But besides that, roughly 115k miles later, I am happy to say that my repair bills have been less than $4,000 within 3 1/2 years of owning it. Bought it with 46k. I think these cars are reliable, but it doesn't mean it'll have it's share of problems.

I turned mine down as well. Most of the repairs I've had to make have been less than than the deductables on most warranties offered to me. I'm more of a DIY type of person anyway, so i'd prefer to fix the issue myself.

Here's my anecdotal summary of Nissan/Infiniti Extended Warranties:
1. If you buy it, you'll never use it.
2. If you don't buy it, then you'll need it.
3. Nissan / Infiniti electronics MAY not be as good (long-run reliability) as Honda/Acura/Toyota/Lexus electronics.
4. If you can afford it, you may want to consider Infiniti Extended Warranty, which adds 10% to the price of the car.
5. Now that Acura makes 4-wheel drive sedans, my next car will probably be an Acura TL or TSX.

Troof. I bought one for my G and I haven't used it yet... However, I bought one on my 350z and I DID use it. I figure it just takes that one big issue to pay for itself in the end.

I have a 03 with 115K and only have spent about 1000 bucks total with the throttle issue,(throttle replaced and relearned) and the leaking oil into the spark plugs. So gasket covers were replace. My G has been solid as they come. The usual maintenance items besides the two issues.

I am assuming this warranty is aftermarket? If that is the case, find a good independent mechanic and put the 3,800 bucks in the bank.

I got the extended warranty on my G and only had to use it twice so far. I am almost even when i paid for it. If you can, talk them down.

Since my OEM warranty has ended, here are my list of repairs, and my repair costs. This is not including routine maintenance like fluid changes, brakes, tires, etc.

I now have 121K miles on the car

3rd brake lights ($50)
Both front wheel bearings/hubs ($500 in parts)

That's about 2.5 years right there, so it works out to about $18.30 per month since then. So for me, not getting the warranty was worth it.

Check your high mount brake light connection. I had this problem and it turns out to be a loose connection. LED lights are much more reliable than regular lights. They should last longer than your car!

As for extended warranty, there are too much exclusions and deductables. It's just not worth the money. Our engine and tranny are practically bullet proof as long as you take care of them.
