I have a 2005 6MT sedan that I am about to purchase tires for, the car has about 130,000 miles on it. If I have the factory sensor chances are they are going to go bad soon and If I mount and balance my new tires I don't want to have to unmount them to get to the sensors in the near future if they go bad. Not to mention they probably won't all go at once and I don't want to deal with that either. Is there a way for me to look at the current sensors when they unmount the tires and tell if they are OEM? That way if they are in fact the factor sensors I am going to tell the tire place to take them off the rims and just use reglular rubber valve stems. If they are not OEM maybe the previous owner replaced them with the current set of tires (about 60,000 miles ago) on the car and I will keep them. The factor sensors do go bad about 150,000 miles correct?

why don't you want to use the ones you have now and why would you think they are not the OEM ones ? I don't know why you would expect them all 4 to go bad at 150k miles ???
I thought the battery inside them were only good for about 7 years or 150,000 miles

05 at 117K miles with 04 coupe 18s and mine work fine as well.
I guess i am a little closer to that 150,000 mile threshold than most. I know that if i mount these new tires with the current sensors that they will start to go one at a time. That's why i was just going to get rid of them now.

I've often thought about what everyone is going to do when these things start bombing out. It's not going to be cheap to replace all of them on top of getting them all reprogrammed. I think most will choose to ignore it.

Mine finally died this year at 120K miles. That's 6 years?
OEM replacements are on ebay for about $100. I'm a stickler for things on my car working as they should, so I will buy them, have my tire guy install them when i get new tires this fall, and then reprogram them.
I beleive tire shops can now reprogram TPMS. I don't think it's a dealer only racket these days. I admit i need to look into it a bit more.
I've gone the last 5 months with the light on. Doesn't bother me, but I'd like the system to work as it should. I just check my tires the old fashioned way with a pressure gauge

Ok, so decided to crack open the FSM and have a read.

I located the tpms interface plug under the OBD2 connector. Had to pull the trim panel down to cut it from the harness. Inserted a paper clip, turned the key to on, and grounded the connector. Started blinking codes, and one was 48 indicating the rear drivers side sensor battery way low.
For the hell of it, I lowered the tire pressures to the pressures shown on page 17. I used a stick pressure guage which wasn't all that accurate. I just made sure all 4 pressures were different. I turned the ignition to on and grounded the connector 6 times. The tpms light blinked steadily. So I started the car and went for a drive. Light stopped blinking and stayed off after 2 miles. Wouldn't you know it it worked! I just need to top my tire pressures off in the AM and see if the solid light goes away. (It used to blink 60 seconds then stay solid indicating an error...now it's solid).
Either way, it told me my right rear senso might be an issue.
40700-cd001 is the part number. $30 on eBay. I can replace it and do the reset procedure here to reset the system...I hope.
Lets see if the light goes off in the AM when I fill the tires up to proper pressure

So i topped the tires off and guess what? The lights off!! Awesome. That was easy.
I did get a code though for right rear TPMS battery voltage low, so I guess i'm close to needing to replace it. But at least I know I can identify the dead sensor, have it changed out, and reprogram them myself.
My light wasn't on originally for low pressure. It was the system error blink where it blinks for 60 seconds and then stays solid. FIlling the tires to almost 40psi wouldn't clear it, so I assumed i had a dead sensor that gave up the ghost one AM when it was 5 degrees outside. It's summer now, i'd bet $1 i have this same issue this winter. I'll come out to a 5 degree AM and the battery in the sensor will be dead and my light will come on.
Anyway...that was too easy.
A new sensor (P/N 40700-CD001) is $30ish on Ebay ($100 for all 4). And if you can program them yourself like I just did..thent this shouldn't be so bad. I need new tires soon myself. Maybe I'll just spend the $100, swap out all 4, and then reprogram them myself.

As an update i got my new tires installed yesterday. I ended up removing all the tpms sensors from the rims and installing regular rubber valve stems. The tire shop removed the valve cores from the tpms sensors and gave the sensors back to me. I put them in a ziplock bag in my glovebox. As of right now i have no light lit up on the dash. I do not know if they reprogrammed anything or whatbut i am stoked the warning light is not lit up. And yes i have put at least 40 miles on the car since the new tires.
