Recommendations for trunk bike rack for sedan w/OEM spoiler?
Good afternoon folks,
Recently bought a bicycle and I'd like to get a trunk-mount rack for it. I have already considered and rejected roof-mount racks (don't want to have to lift ~25lb bike on and off the roof) and hitch-mount racks (car's already lowered so I'm worried about scraping, plus costly to pay for hitch equipment & installation on top of the hitch rack itself).
I've got an OEM-style spoiler, so I'd need a rack that can clear it. So far the consensus among non-G drivers is to get one of the following (with the Saris options getting more far more recommendations than the Yakima):
Saris Bones 805 ( )
Saris Bones RS (
Amazon.com : Saris Bones RS (Rachet Strap) Trunk Rack: 3-Bike; Black : Automotive Bike Racks : Sports & Outdoors
)
or the Yakima KingJoe 2 ( )
So.. what racks do you guys & gals with sedans w/OEM spoilers who ride bikes and use trunk-mount racks use?
Thanks in advance!

I have two kids, and we go riding pretty often during the summer. I was not keen on the idea of having the weight of 3 bikes on the trunk frame, so I went for a hitch-mounted rack. I bought the Curt hitch and installed it myself in my driveway. Took me a few hours spread out over the course of two days, but it was basically a simple job. Remove the taillights, trunk interior trim, bumper cover, bolt on the new hitch, line up the bumper and cut out a notch for the hitch, and then re-install everything. The hitch tucks up very close to the bumper - you hardly notice it when there's nothing hanging off it.
I bought an Allen 3-bike rack made for the 1 1/4" hitch reciever, and leave it on for most of the year because I never know when we might want to take a ride. Here's a few pics so you can decide for yourself. Honestly, for the price you'd pay for a Saris or some other high-end trunk mount, you can get a hitch, a rack, and have room for more bikes, plus they're further away from the car (less chance of scratching or damage!).
Here's the hitch by itself with the bumper cover off. It's really well made, and very solid.

Rack folds up nice when not in use.

One of my 20" BMX bikes on the rack.

Closeup of the hitch. You can see, it's basically even with the muffler - if you're not scraping that, you won't scrape the hitch.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input The Fixer; my car has been lowered a couple inches so my muffler is already scraping every now-&-again
which is one of the primary reasons I'm hesitant to go with a hitch. I'm not able to do this myself and wouldn't trust it to anyone but a professional shop, which is where my cost concerns come into play, since I'd be paying for parts, labour to install the parts, and then a hitch rack on top of all that, vs just spending money 1-time and getting a trunk-mount rack that'll work, know what I mean?
