A crap shoot
Hi. My son loves my 2004 Infiniti G35X sedan. What's not to love? However, it currently has 170,000 miles on it and needs new tires desparately. My question is, is this car worth putting new tires on? Boy, how much longer can this car last without being nickled and dimed for replacement parts? I think the engine is ok but I've heard the transmissions don't last as long as the engines. I'm trying to convince my son that it's better off being used as a trade-in for a younger, lower-mileaged used car than hanging on to it. When it runs, it runs great. But boy, anything can happen to a car with this kind of mileage. Any advice?

How old is your son? Is this his first car? How has the car been maintained? How long have you had it and what have you replaced?
Let's assume everything is stock except for the usual maintenance items (tires, belts, fluids, spark plugs, battery, filters, etc)
If this is going to be his first car, and the car is well maintained and only needs tires, I would put tires on it and give it to him and let him drive it for a year or two and then think about trading in.
If he is going to be driving long distances often, I'd get something newer/more reliable.
Having had a car for up to 225,000 miles, everything starts breaking, nothing lasts as long as it should, and in the end it was cheaper to get a newer car than paying for maintenance.
I just bought my G35 with 43K miles, and I plan on driving it until about your mileage, then give it away or something, since it won't be worth much in ten more years.
