Correct PSI for AVONS M550 225/50/17???

Just wondering as OEM is suppposed to be 30PSI. However when they were installed the Mechanic said it should be around 35PSI. Something about potholes and protecting the sidewalls.

Your mechanic may know what he's talking about, but I personally wouldn't stray too far from what the manufacturer suggests.
On my Sedan, I ran the tires about 32 psi, much as I'd like to have run them harder.
Too much astray from what's recommended and you change handling characteristics, not to mention traction.

Oh yeh, and as far as potholes are concerned: it won't make much odds whether you have 20 or 50 psi in them.........it's best to stay away from potholes.....

My personal opinion is that the difference btw OEM and your aftermarket rubber is negligable.

Here's how they 2 stack up:

OEM. width= 215mm.-- aspect ratio=55% yielding a sidewall height of 118.25 mm's
Aftermarket= 225mm.-- aspect ratio=50% yielding a sidewall height of 112.5 mm's.

That 6 mm's won't amount to much. Don't worry about it, but do stay away from potholes and curbs.

Colin

Thanks. And I will do my best to stay away from the pothole, but it will be hard with that stupid pothole magnet in my ride

I have the 550's and I run them at 42. They max. cold pressure is 51 per the sidewall notes. They feel good there and good mileage too. 30 is rediculous and for a "granny" soft ride.

I'm pissed. I bent my rim last week because the idiots at tirerack (Miles) said to run my Avon's at the manufacturer PSI recommendation (actually I had them at 33.5PSI). Anyway now I had to use my spare rim and I now have them inflated at 40 PSI. Anyway, how I wish I could personally hold tirerack responsible for giving such **** poor advice.

There is no way that your rim would bend from running the tires at the recommended PSI by the manufacturer. Chances are it would not have mattered if it was inflated at 150% of the recommended PSI as you obviously hit something in order to do the damage in the first place. I do agree with those where ride quality and/or handling are different depending on inflation.
