A question before buying

Hi guys, I'm going to be in the market for a new car soon, and one of the cars i was considering is a G35 Sedan. I read about the oil consumption issues in the 05+ cars. And I was wondering if that is a major issue I could run into in the here and now of 2015, and what I mean by that is, if I for example buy a 2005 6mt Sedan with 115k on the odo that doesn't have that issue at present is the car likely to start? Basically what I'm asking on a general level is if the "if it was gonna do it, it would have done so already" line of logic applies to these cars that have been around for a few years. I'd also like any advice on other warning signs for any other common reliability issues I should look for before purchasing. Thanks for any input any of you may have.

-J

Most damage an engine is going to see naturally is gonna happen at or around about 70k miles, so no, it won't just rear its head all the sudden at 115k. However, a lot of people (if they didn't have their motor replaced under warranty) could have just been "living with it" which means they have just continued to top off between oil changes. Those sellers will not tell you that it burns oil, and that should be your concern, cuz it's not something you'd notice without driving it for around 1k miles. Dig?

Have a leakdown test done at a reputable mechanic. May cost you some money, but it could save you a hell of a lot more.

Any engine can start consuming at any point, so it's hard to say if you find one at 115K that doesn't consume, that it won't start at 120K.

But like said, a lot of driver's just live with it. With my 152K mile '06, i burn about 2 quarts per oil change. Ijust carry a few quarts of oil in the trunk and check the dipstick here and there. $8 in oil every couple months is cheaper than a new car or engine rebuild
