I'm new to this forum and need your help. Today I decided to clean the contacts on my drivers/passenger side, as my fuel gauge has never gone past 1/4 tank.

It's dumb, but I wasn't paying attention to the direction of the driver's side float arm. I reinstalled it so that the float arm was closer to the door, and not the center of the car. Is this correct or do I need to reverse the float arm? Does it matter?

i think they only install ONE way. because of the fuel lines and there is an indent somewhere.

 

Thank you Turtle! Appreciate your response. I must have re-installed the driver's side sending unit correctly, since it can only fit one way.

I did pay a repair shop to clean off the contacts first, but also decided to do it on my own since I wasn't sure if they took the time to clean well. I took about 5 q tips to each sender, the driver's side was fairly clean but the passenger's very dirty.

When I cold start, the fuel gauge is typically higher (for example 3/4). After warm up, the gauge goes down to about 1/4 tank (to 1/2 for example), and stays steady there.

Any reason why this is fluctuating? Is there something I did wrong or should check somewhere else? Before I started to get into any of this, my gauge would always go to full after refueling, but never below 1/4. Should I check and make sure the brass contacts are making good contact? Maybe delicately bend them down to ensure this?

After the repair shop cleaned the contacts, after fill up, my gauge went well above F and is fluctuating now. It never fluctuated before the cleaning procedure.

Actually i didn't read your post correctly.

The driver side i guess can be installed backwards but there should be a indent to prevent you from it, there are no fuel lines on the driver side, only a connector.

I've been battling with this issue as well. But i cleaned my sensors and it did nothing, i replaced my sensors and it did nothing. Turns out my gauge cluster is the most likely issue.

My gauge cluster is STUCK ON FULL.

I have 1 week old passenger and driver sending units for a 2005 AWD if you wanna buy them off me. Me and my mechanic thought it was the problem since its very common and it happens on all the 350z he works on. But once installed it didn't fix anything and with a known good unit, he was able to test the wiring and etc and determine it was the cluster not showing the correct info.

So we just pull the new units off the car and its been sitting in the boxes since. Give me a PM if your interested. They are doing me no good sitting here.
