I have 170k+ miles on my 2004 sedan with A/T. The engine has started giving me problems, and it's understandable cause I drive it pretty hard. I am looking at replacin it asap. I obviously want the newest/best engine I can afford to put in it. I can probably afford 3.5k max. I heard I could put an 05 motor in it. would that be a straight swap or not? If so, is that the newest engine that can be s direct swap? I'll change motor mounts, just because when I do the swap. I really just want to know so I have more options when I'm shopping around. Also,I don't know if I have a long block or a short block, would it matter? How do I know which one I have? are the engines from the coupes or the 350z's compatible for the same years, or do those have different years I can swap for? Thanks for any help guys, I tried to find a thread on this before I asked but I couldn't find any.

Let's begin with a lesson, short block is just the block with pistons/rods installed. Long block is a short block that also has heads, the two combined make a long block. What you have in your car is a complete engine or long block...understand? Installing a '05 engine in your '04 should be an easy swap with little or no changes!

Awesome, well now I know the difference. I thought it was the length or something, like a small block V8 vs big block V8. Thanks, is a 2005 the newest year that should be a straight swap? I still owe almost 6k on the car, I don't think I could sell it in its condition and break even, so i don't have a choice but fix it.

2005-2006 sedans have the same engine. The non-revup 2005-2007 coupes do as well.Originally Posted by Faulty

So basically, any engine 2003-2006 maybe 07 coupe will fit as long as it's not a Revup, and a long block is just more of a completed engine. Awesome, thanks guys. Is there any thing else I should know?

I'd prob go long block unless you are 100% sure your heads are ok. If you get a short block, you'd need to swap your existing heads over to it in addition to intake, and all other engine components.
A long block is not a complete engine, so you will need to strip your engine of items to install on this engine,
This is close to what you'd get if you ordered a long block. Heads on.

This is close to what a short block would be. basically engine block with crank, rods and pistons installed. No heads or upper valvetrain

.... noI'm doing it with a couple friends. I can't afford an engine and install. I'm getting a used engine, just low miles... well lowish. 65k. My mom said she might help, of so. I might be able to get a new one, but then I don't the cash for all the gaskets and stuff I'd need. on ebay, most of them look more complete than the long block you showed. I'll only have a few days to switch it over. It's my only ride right now.
