Gear Oil
Gear Oil
Hey guys,
I just got my car back in November and this is my first time trying to get active on a forum.
I know I'm potentially opening a can of worms with a question as simple as this, but I thought I'd get some recommendations/opinions. But what gear oil is the generally accepted gear oil for nissans/infiniti's?
I know Honda guys love putting Honda MTF in their transmissions and subarus love Motul gear 300. So I was thinking about Nissan MTF for the trans and Motul for the Diff. What are your guys' opinion on this? I know I read that it is absolutely essential you put GL-4 in your trans or your syncros will be toast.
Thanks for any input!
BTW: sorry if i posted this in the wrong spot, still figuring out the nav for this site.

I have a 5at and use Mobil 1 75w90 in the rear diff.
Yea, its a Manual trans. Thanks for the input, i'm not really sure how picky a rear diff is to what oil is used. I know I have 1L in my garage of Motul, that's why i was leaning toward that since i already have some.
I used that same Mobil 1 in the front and rear diff.
I replaced the fluid at 50K miles. At 150K miles, I replaced it again. The fluid came out pretty clean and very little metal "sludge" on the magnet.

I would not put anything except Nissan MTF in the transmission. I had my mechanic recently put in another gear oil GL4 of exactly the same weight as the the NIssan MtF and I could barely shift it in first and second - it was extremely stiff. I had him change it out with Nissan MTF and it was back to normal immediately. I see no reason to fix something that is not broken. There is something different about the viscosity or lubricants in the Nissan OEM fluid that goes beyond the specs. Just based on an n of 1, but it was pretty convincing. My mechanic did not think it could be the fluid but after he drove it before and after, he had to agree.
