Running hot

Hey everyone, I purchased an 06 x sedan ten months ago with 60k all maintenance was performed by previous owner at the dealer with records. The car was in excellent shape when purchased and has ran flawlessly up until yesterday. On my way home from visiting family the car I noticed getting hot. I pulled into a store parking lot at which point the temp gauge was maxed out. I immediately shut the car off and opened the hood and seen the expansion tank boiling and over flowing from the top of the tank. I had my girlfriend grab some distilled water from the store to add back to the cooling system. After starting the car once again the temp began to raise at which time I had the car towed back to my home.

The following day I purchased a spill free funnel kit to remove air from the system. After running and purging the system of all air I ran the car with the heater on and let it idle. The heater was blowing warm now and the temp was in the normal range, so I took it for a spin. Two blocks away under load the temp gauge increased and I had to bring it back home immediately. Once I arrived home and shut the car down for a few minutes, I started it back and now the heater is not blowing warm air.

I'm a bit lost at this point, don't know if there is more air, or if there is a t state issue or something else. I am planning to take to the dealer but if it is something easy I would like to handle it myself. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help.

Man...the one thing that makes this bad is that it maxed out on the temp guage. A mild overheat would have no effect on this motor, but an extreme one would definitely blow the head gasket. You need to go get a leakdown test.

Thermostats do fail. I'd prob add that to the short list of things to check. Might be stuck closed. Can always remove it, and drop it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens.

This is a hard car to "burp". The radiator in front and the valve in back both need to be purged.

I'm new to the G35 but have owned 2 350zs over 8 yrs. Are you doing this on a flat surface or incline? I've found that having the front end raised slightly has helped ( driveway if possible) and take your time. I've had to repeat the procedure 3 to 4 times so don't be too concerned if you have to attempt it more than once.

It could be a blown head gasket. That's what my Subaru would do. You'd be fine and then red-line. I poured a bottle of copper into it and that fixed it.
