Gas Mileage!

I'm not sure if its me, but I have a feeling the G35 does not average 19 to 26 MPG. Am I the only one, or do i have a heavy @ss foot? I started at full tank, cost me $36 to fill the 20 gallon tank. So for every quarter tank, its 5 gallons. I'm at half tank now and driving 140 miles, 70% highway, 30% streets. That's about 14mpg. WTF? Anybody seeing different? Please tell me I have a heavy foot.

Could it be that recall?

Re: Gas Mileage!

Yeah, I've seen mine drop that low, too. It's hard to drive a G35 sedately enough to achieve 17mpg in the city. I do manage 24 on road trips, though.

Re: Gas Mileage!

Trying to calculate MPG after 1/2 tank is pretty tough. Try calculating it after 3 fill ups. Add all three "miles per fill up" and divide by the total number of gallons used. That should give you more accurate figure. Last time I did that, mine came out to 22.5 MPG (60% hwy/40% city). I usually go over 100mph a few times a week so, I'm not that light footed. But, I normally drive around 70mph on the freeway.

Re: Gas Mileage!

Most likely the gas gauge is not linear, so just because it reads at half-tank, does not necessarily mean that you've used 10 gallons. A more accurate measurement is to top off the tank, see how much fuel you've had to add (this should be close to what you've used), and compare that with the miles driven.

I usually get 20.5 - 22.0 on my weekday commute, 90% highway, and 17 - 19 on the weekends when I perform more short trip and city driving. I have never gotten less than 17.0 mpg.

Once for a period of 2 weeks, I refrained from fast jack rabbit starts and fast accelerations, and got 23.7 mpg on my best tank (used 4 tanks of gas).

Re: Gas Mileage!

I am noticing the same thing, at first I thought maybe it was because the car wasn't broken in yet, but I now have 2200 miles and around town I am only able to get 16 mpg at best and road trips 23mpg? I was thinking of taking it to the dealer to see what they say?

Re: Gas Mileage!

EPA mileage ratings are generated under laboratory conditions. I've never owned a vehicle and actually achieved the EPA rating.. usually 1-2mpg less. Your driving habits and differences in manufacturing tolerances could make it swing either way, I suppose.

With a high-performance engine, and a lead foot, I don't see 14mpg as being indicative of something wrong with the engine. Try driving through a whole tank of gas and follow the old break-in rules (4k rpm max, never floor it, etc.) and see if driving that way brings the mileage back up. Personally, I can't manage to baby the car for that long a period of time.. so I get almost 17mpg according to the nav for the first half a tank, then it starts going down as the corners of my mouth go up. Re: Gas Mileage!

Edmunds stated this very clearly in their review. They said something about this car being further off the quoted MPG than any other they've reviewed.

With a lot of in-town driving, I'm currently getting:
4/28/2003 17.43 Gals 349.3mi 20.04mpg
5/4/2003 17.67 Gals 335.3mi 18.97mpg

While I still have 1/2 tank, I'll be filling up again on my way out of town tomorrow. This'll be a good trip to see what kind of freeway-only numbers I'm getting.

Re: Gas Mileage!

I get about 15.5mpg on the streets and on the freeway and highway I get like 21.

Re: Gas Mileage!

I'm averaging 17 mpg (all town driving, and with A/C on all the time).. When I did drive it a week without the A/C on, I got 19.8 mpg. So the A/C is a major gas killer.

Bottom line is Infiniti lied about there average MPG, it should be more like 17/22

Re: Gas Mileage!

I wouldn't say they lied. There's a specific way the EPA tests are done. I would expect any high-performance car to suffer here, as the type of person who buys such a car is not the type of person who can drive it gently enough to achieve that mileage.

Well thanks for all the good discussion, saves me the trip into the dealer to see what was up with it.

Re: Gas Mileage!

I'm getting 23 - 25 MPG, 60 highway 40 city and I don't baby it either. I take it up to 80 whenever possible, sometimes higher.

Re: Gas Mileage!

My miles are 90% highway during the week and I cruise at 85mph for the most part, and I usually get 21/22 mpg, comparing actual miles driven to actual fuel filled.

<Bison> are you getting your numbers from your Nav computer? In my experience, these are usually optimistic.

Re: Gas Mileage!

Cool, then I guess most of us have heavy foots....It's not easy to restrain their urge with 260 ponies under the hood. I gotta chill though, I only have 500 miles logged in. I might have to duct tape a block under my gas pedal......hehehe....

See you in the slow lane! (for now)
