first gear reving way too high

I got my g35 automatic 3 weeks ago. LOVE IT. went through two tanks of premium gas. This last time I filled with regular unleaded. I dont know if this is the reason, but first gear is now reving up to like 6500 rpms and I am not accellerating, things even off after a while. Is this the gas, is this the normal breaking in process? Was kicking *** off of a green light, now reving up and crawling. Any help would be GREATLY apreciated.

Yes...deff broken. Park it and call the dealer. No car should be revving like that in gear.

EDIT - BTW - Not at all related to your choice of gas.

On other model cars, I know they have a "pedal position sensor" that can cause this same prob. Had it happen before, but it usually only happend here and there, but usually like when you first started it, the computer accidentally like had the accellerator pedal down (couldn't feel or see it) but the RPM's were up higher than normal idle like yours. Might be your prob, but i'm my no means a mechanic.

Don't have a G35, but a VW Passat (yes I'm lurking ) and it has the drive-by-wire throttle system and that has the potential of getting "stuck" someitmes. Does the G35 have something similiar. But a trip to a dealer is definitely recommended.

The G does have DBW. I have seen a couple of cases of people having issues with this on the G, I think most recently a post on freshalloy. Take it to the dealership, they'll fix you right up I'm sure.

I agree that is not right, in fact with a new car 6500 rpm's is too high. Have the dealer check it out. I would switch the transmission over to the manual side, go easy on the gas and manual shift to keep the revs with in reason.

Please give us an update when you get the problem fixed.

Let us know, as my 05 sedan a/t shifts at 6300 in first, however, there is no loss of power???

Did you try the ECU "pedal reset" method? That might reset your throttle position learning.

I was just spending a little quality time with my G. It seems to shift at about 2500 RPM's this is with an easy acceleration.

You took the words right outta my post! Why would ya put in anything less than premium in when the owner's manual clearly states that fuel must be AT Least 91 octane? I run 1/2 tank 93 and switch to 91 for the other half. I use Sunoco primarily because it's what I run in any of my race/performance vehicles, and I'm partial to the quality. But, it does have a detrimental effect to run a leesor octane.....so why (in a brand new vehicle no less) run regular? No offense...just curious?? JBX

I'm not sure what the '04 manual says but on page 9-3 of the '05 manual

"FUEL RECOMMENDATION SEDAN MODELS USE UNLEADED REGULAR GASOLINE WITH AN OCTANE RATING OF ATLEAST 87 AKI. (RESEARCH OCTANE NUMBER 91)"

You're right kiddo, I'm a product of the sixties and transposed my numbers LOL (I'm lucky I didn't buy a Honda by accident) None the less the originator of the thread stated that his third tank of gas was a tank load of "regular", which is what put my "ina godda davida" brain into overload lol. Why spend 30+ thousand dollars on a performance car and put bacon renderings into it? Sorry bout' my faux pa with the 91/93 brother...at least I haven't started wetting my pants yet (I'll need "performance" Depends lol) JBX (I think?)

I wasn't doubting your wisdom, I also go with the better grades of SUNOCO only I shell out a few more clams at fill er up time than you do.

You comment led me to believe that with the torque/HP change for '05 that fuel requirements were changed also, looks like status quo.
