Solving my overheating issues to start off my build.
Solving my overheating issues to start off my build. Need tips.
Just recently bought at 2003 g35 sedan. Took it bone stock to a drift pit at a car meet. At the end of the night, my car wouldn’t start. Opened up the hood and it’s was easy to tell my car was overheating. I also noticed that my fans turn on at any input of gas I give it, cold or not. So something’s gotta be wrong. So now I’ve got a big shopping cart ready to make my wife unhappy. Here’s what I plan on getting.
mishimoto radiator
mishimoto racing thermostat (is it even necessary?)
new water pump (car is at 137k miles and idk when it’s been replaced so might as well do some preventative maintenance)
New coolant
Oil cooler (don’t know which one yet)
a few other things I wanna get are also something along the lines of a z tube. Mishimoto has one that’s cheaper, and a pop charger with z1 couplers to finish off the look. I’m also getting a plenum spacer. That’s all in the near future of what I’m gonna start off my build with. I’m looking for general advice on what products that’s I’m looking for you recommend or if you have any other cheaper options for what I’m looking into. I’m kinda scared on changing my water pump because of the way Nissan designed it in the engine. Any tips/ comments/ you don’t need that would be appreciated!

Personally I would just solve the overheating issue with OEM-like equipment. On a NA motor there is no need for upgraded coolant system for track use. It's all plenty sufficient.
I would start with the fan motors, they are pretty notorious for spinning slowly as they age. Coolant replace is always good. Water pumps rarely need to be replaced.
An upgrade you SHOULD get though is an oil pan spacer and an aftermarket oil cooler. Factory cooler uses a coolant to oil heat exchanger, this will take even more load off of the coolant system not cooling hot oil. Plus the aftermarket oil-air oil coolers do a much better job overall. The pan spacer adds an extra 3/4 quart crankcase capacity and is very easy to install.
If your fans are not turning on-off properly it's probably the fan relays, there are 3 in the IPDM fuse box. Replace all 3 with genuine Nissan relays.

Also, you should install aftermarket gauges for oil pressure, oil temp, battery voltage. If you were just going to add 2 gauges then oil pressure and battery voltage.
I've seen a couple really clean installs of oil pressure, battery voltage that fit into the little flip-up cubby if you don't have a NAV equipped car.

I agree the Cleric, don't throw a lot of parts at the problem. Trouble shoot the cooling system then get what you need to restore it. If you need to replace the radiator, aluminum with OEM capacity is fine, eliminates the plastic top and bottom developing a leak. Bad fans can definitely cause problems so check those. You may have a minor coolant leak somewhere.
