TRansponder key busted
TRansponder key busted
Gave my 04 G35 x a couple years ago to my son. He called today said car won't start. I find the key is busted and no transponder or chip left in the key. Whole corner broke off and smashed and unable to locate other part.
WHat are some options? Other then dealer unless its only one. Car is imported from US to Canada so I worry about them finding any info at Nissan dealership as they have before? Will a locksmith cut the new key as the old one is still usable and re program it? Any other things I can try? Any programs to delete chip ? Thanks.

Are you sure your son isn't just seeking your attention? (Sorry, just kidding.) Only one key for the car? And does it have remote keyless entry? But it has a regular "turn-key" ignition which is looking for the chip, right?
Seems to me you should be able to find a replacement key blank, have it cut to match the door and ignition cylinders, and then program the car to accept the new chip. Just need to be sure it's the right key for that year so it will be compatible. That may all be doable by a locksmith, but I'm not sure. We're now expecting them to be able to program the computers in every year of every car... Gotta be a headache.

When I got my G35 coupe it only came with 1 key and the exact same situation of the immobilizer chip about to fall out. I ended up getting OEM replacement keys, getting them cut at a local hardware store, and then using a scantool to register them. Be sure you buy at least 2 keys and make sure they are OEM replacement, not the cloneable kind.
Honestly none of it was difficult at all and now I can register keys for the rest of my fleet of mobile scrap metal lol
Not sure the locksmith is going to be able to do much unless they come out to you. Someone will need to interact with the immobilizer on the car in order to register a new key.
I think that disabling the NATs could also take care of the situation also -- https://www.uprev.com/secure/nats-disabling.html but I didn't go that route and never went all the way down that research chain.

I wish he just wanted attention, only when car acting up. Only one key for car and has a FOB for remote entry and is a turn key ignition looking for a chip. Pretty sure I've found the key chip to car in owners manual(silver pin code on it). Just trying to avoid the 400+ dollars up here in Ontario if another option to have a key made by dealer if any.

It would be cheaper for me to have Nissan cut a key then sending BCM to Texas for 350 USD plus shipping I believe. How much was the scan tool?
You're really overthinking this, just call around to a local locksmith and ask if they can cut and program a key. Getting replacement keys made is a very commonplace issue and I'm CERTAIN you have a local locksmith that can make a new key, if he can't program it then just have your local Nissan make one. It doesn't matter if you go to a Nissan dealership in the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, ETC, it's all the same Consult-II/III program they use for programming the BCM to accept the key.

I don't think I'm overthinking it, not many options where I live. Closest dealer is 1.5 hours and local locksmiths do locks up here in the bush, not sure they would even know a scan tool. I was looking for another way to avoid the huge cost at dealer. It's alot more costly in Canada then US. I will call locksmiths in surrounding area for sure in hopes there is one that can do it. SO really I either use Nissan or find a locksmith that will cut and program the key, was hopng for some delete program or programmer for it. Thanks.

Yeah, certainly check with your local lockies first. You might also ring the Nissan dealer 150km away and ask if there's a way to order a replacement key using either that metal tag code or the car's VIN.
Or there's this:

I can't guarantee that's the exact key that you need but there must be one out there. Your regional locksmiths should at least be able to cut it to match your existing key. And if you want to program the car to except the new chip, others in here can point you to usable scan tools.
Then you can become the local Nissan expert!

The dealership charges 1 hour labor plus parts, you can supply the key if you want someone else to cut it.
I'm sorry you live in an area where the locksmiths are unable to work on any car built after 1998 when RFID interlocks became commonplace. Worth calling around though t make sure that SOMEONE doesn't have the required $500 handheld scan tool/programmer to work on Nissan cars though.

Thanks everyone for the help, replies and suggestions. After scouring my sons apartment i've located the chip. Taped it in key and voila, it runs again. I told him to find about a replacement as I did my part lol. I'll hear from him next time when something is wrong, gave him the car and I still wrench on the damn thing. Thanks again.
