!!! 5at Shifting !!!

Pardon my ignorance, but this is my first automatic with a manual mode.

But, on the way home today from work I found something pretty interesting.

When I normally down shift in MM mode, I hit down once then again say for like fifth to fourth to third. To my surprise as I was passing someone today and needed to speed up, I went from fifth right to third. I just slapped down the stick twice pretty fast and boom, third gear.

Needless to say I was doing it all the way home 5 to 3 4 to 2..
Just makes me love my car even more.

So it's new to me, maybe not to others. But either way....SWEET.

What is the new part? Choosing a gear while accelerating?

I try to leave my car in full auto mode. I don't trust screwin around with performance shifting with an AT and then find I need to rebuild a very expensive trans. I may be wrong but if you want to shift, buy a 6MT. Just my opinion.

For true shifting enjoyment..ya...get the 6mt. But they put the MM for the 5at in there for a reason, might as well enjoy it

Besides that's what I have a warranty for.

just use your manual with moderation and not drive it too hard and it should last you a long time. IMO.

On my 2005 G35X I found that if I shift to manual mode while cruising on the highway, the transmission would gear down to 4th gear everytime.

I would be driving around 60 mph (100 km/hr), once I shift it to manual mode it would gear down to 4th.

Does this happen to any other 2005 G35X?
Why would they want it to do this?

I would prefer if it stayed in 5th gear and let me choose to drop it into 4th.

I don't have an X but mine does it as well.
From what I can figure out, is that when cruising you would probably switch over to Manual mode to pass or accelerate. So kicking the tranny down into 4th would allow that.
Guess the engineers were thinking

Mine as well - according to my sales guy, it's supposed to. Designed that way. Makes sense to me..

I think it'll be fine with normal use. A manual-mode shift at high RPM uses the same pieces to shift gears as auto-mode does - it just takes it's input from you rather than the ECU. Running to redline in either mode should be mechanically the same. Exceeding redline (limiter?) wouldn't be a good idea I suppose.

Most of us use our manual-mode for running up through the gears - I have never used mine for braking the car - that could cause some added stress if done improperly, but so would botching shifts in a manual - a more likely scenario. With normal use and the rev-matching feature (half the people driving manuals can't rev match half as good as this auto does it) I doubt it would do any harm..

If I'm not mistaken (have to look around for other threads that discuss this to be absolutely sure) our 5AT is the same as in the M which carries higher HP and TQ ratings. If it (our 5AT) has been engineered to meet that standard in manual-mode, our cars should be fine.

Some of the highest performing cars in the world are moving toward manual-shift automatics - the technology has come a long way.

Not trying to argue, just offering a different opinion. Either way, it's a great ride. I don't miss the 6MT at all. Especially when I'm sitting in traffic and I smell clutch.

I have an 04 sedan AT. It does the same thing. The dealer did some research and found that the engineers planned it this way as they figured when going into manumode, you were probably wanting to get the revs up.

Lately, my auto trans has donme some funny things. At 42 mph, when driving steadily, the car seems to quickly buck on occassion. The dealer said that is when the torque converter is locking up. Does this happen to any one else?

No, but the car only has about 550 on her. I'll run her around today (42 steady state) and see if I can duplicate. Honestly, compared to every car I've ever owned this is the smoothest auto I've ever seen. My biggest problem was getting used to having 5 gears. The quick shifting 1-2-3 was a little odd at first.
