Problem seeing the back when backing up
Problem seeing the back when backing up
Anyone has this problem? I can never tell whether the back is about to hit something. When I think it's going to hit, and I step outside, there's actually a pretty big gap. Any thoughts?
Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
Any new car takes awhile to get used to where the corners are. At least the "catamaran" headlight things give you an idea on the front.
Mine has the rear spoiler, that helps.

Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
Rear spoiler is great for marking the back of the car and as a reference point to tell how close/far the car behind you is. Also makes a great trunk handle which the G35 otherwise lacks.

The 2003 has a handle!......And a button!

I've got a button too.. on the inside. And an extra 12v outlet.. and a full-width cargo net.. so THERE!
You know, you'd think they'd make the trunk struts strong enough to lift the darn thing up by itself, even with the spoiler on!

Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
Yeah, I have this problem and I have a spoiler, too, which I don't find to be particularly helpful in backing up because the G35 sedan sits high and the front ends of many cars are lower so you can't see the very front of the car behind you.
Also--about using the spoiler as a trunk handle. I'll share a caution. I was strongly advised against that by both the dealer and a couple other folks with spoilers. It wasn't designed to be a trunk handle and you can inadvertently damage the spoiler using this way over time. The trunk lid isn't heavy and the hinge is balanced to close very easily while holding the bottom and giving a little tug. Same for opening it up. Since I'm a petite woman and don't have problems with lifting/closing the trunk from the bottom, I'm sure guys can handle the trunk lid easily this way.

Use your mirrors ppl driving vans and truckers do it all the time you just have to get used to it.

Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
You can try the real cheese way and open the door slightly and looking outside while backing in. Just gotta get used to it. I usually find i leave a lot of space in front and back now because I don't wanna scratch my bottoms (car is lowered). Good luck.

It's still a G thang!!

Did I miss something? The 2003.5 has a trunk handle... you open the trunk using the bottom edge of the trunk, and close using the handle on the right inside edge. Grasping handle, pull the trunklid downwards and release, the momentum will close the trunk.

Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
It doesn't have an external trunk handle. And when I hit the trunk release, the trunk lid barely moves.. 1/8" maybe. Closing it isn't the problem, but it seems kinda cheesy to me to have to stick my fingers between the bottom lip of the trunk and the bumper to lift it open.

Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
I agree with ryoken.
My car, although ordered with aero package, came in without it. So I had the choice of having it installed by the dealer or leaving it off. The dealer did not have a silver spoiler available so I got to drive the car for a week without one.
I soon realized that the bottom lip gets quite dirty, making it unpleasant to use the bottom lip and even worse in bad weather. If something happens to the spoiler by using it as a handle (it never has with two Maximas) - well, it's covered by the 4 year warranty.

Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
It is another area that it would seem that NIssan cut costs on. The I35 I drove last weekend opens the trunk about 1/3 open so you don't get your hands dirty and it is not very heavy as well.

I agree. After three months I still can't judge the rear end very well. I have spoiler too..

Re: Problem seeing the back when backing up
The original concept of the G35 had no handle nor a key hole. For that matter it didn't even have a trunk release button. The the 2003 shows up with a handle, outside button and release button inside. That just goes to show that Infiniti does listen to people at shows. Then the 2003.5 comes out with Key Fobe, and trunk release inside. Much cleaner design and it works great.
