I helped design something similar on another vehicle line for that same purpose.
Impressive. I think we got the winning answer! It's original.

That sounds nice but I think it's something they added on the 04 and up in order to keep the sides of the car cleaner as that bottom corner was prone to pick up a bunch of road junk. Sorry it doesn't sound as fancy.

My 2005 6MT has them - they aren't that thick or anything, so I doubt they are designed to be "structural" at all... just plastic.

Oooh!!! Expert high tech engineering handwaving swag! I know what I'm talking
about, I do that all the time at work.

Like I posted earlier, it is listed at as a mud guard in the service manual. It's plastic,
so not much structural strength. BTW the side skirts are also plastic, so how could it
hinder opening the doors after a crash?

Service Advisors Response

True or not I do not know, but I noticed these things the day I took delivery. I asked what was "hanging off" my new car. The service advisor told me they were there to indicate the proper jack points of the car?

Told me not to worry they would get hard then just fall off! Yeah, I've heard that line before
