If the underbody run channel (that black plastic piece that goes from the front wheel to the rear wheel) gets twisted upwards during a crash, it would hinder the opening of the doors and therefore cause a "poor" or "Marginal" crash rating. I helped design something similar on another vehicle line for that same purpose.

about, I do that all the time at work.
Like I posted earlier, it is listed at as a mud guard in the service manual. It's plastic,
so not much structural strength. BTW the side skirts are also plastic, so how could it
hinder opening the doors after a crash?

True or not I do not know, but I noticed these things the day I took delivery. I asked what was "hanging off" my new car. The service advisor told me they were there to indicate the proper jack points of the car?
Told me not to worry they would get hard then just fall off! Yeah, I've heard that line before
