Just "broke" it in

I have had my 04 5AT sedan for exactly two weeks and two days. I let my wife drive it around town yesterday while I drove her Pacifica to work. When I got home, I checked the odo, and it was at 1197 miles; just 3 away from the recommended 1200 break-in period. I just happened to have a game that needed to be returned to Blockbuster, and that took care of those last three miles.

I jumped on the accelerator at a light afterwards, but was disappointed to have to let off before I hit the local posted limit. Up until then, I had not even exceeded 3k rpms, except once to make a pass on the interstate. I've gotta say that I am blown away. The only comparison that I can make is that it was like having a dog penned up in the house all day waiting for you to get home and let it out. Once I did, it felt like a dam bursting with pent up energy. What a rush.

Looking forward to more such events over the next few days.

Congrats. I'm at 997 miles right now. The fact that I know that should tell you all you need to know - LOL.

Tick-tock.. Driving me nuts. It's not like I'm going to do do-nuts in the parking lot when it hits 1201 or anything, it's the point of it - the ANTICIPATION.

^^^ Same here. I figured it's best not to baby it, then it won't like it when I pull out the whip.

Yeah, temptation is there. I've run it briskly up to the 4K limit a few times to put a little bit of a load on the motor and seat the things that need seating. I've also loaded the motor in the middle/upper gears (watching the speedo with one eye and the road with the other) to load it under a variety of conditions.

Other than that, I've followed the break in as written in the manual. I think it's possible to load the motor and seat rings and such while still following the manufacturer's recommendations. I spent a good bit of money on G-Mama and plan on keeping her a while - I figured I should be able to behave (but not 'baby it') for the first 1200 miles.

Maybe it'll matter, maybe it won't. I don't want to be sitting in my driveway 20,000 miles from now wondering if it would have been different if I had followed the manufacturer's recommedation for break-in.

I thought these engines come pretty much broken in as soon as you get them. After the first 100 miles I went over 6k rpm I just couldn't wait any longer. Now I am at 1200 miles and the car feels a little bit quicker already

I didn't baby mine too much. I took the advice of my 80 year old Italian neighbor. "stomp the throttle hard and show your car who is boss"

I never exceed 3,000 rpm. Want to avoid the mechanic shop as long as possible.

"the end of late fees."

Unless your local stores are privately owned and DON'T honor that policy. There was enough uproar here that they modified their policy to a "daily" fee for late returns. But it's still a late fee.
