When to change to synthetic?
When to change to synthetic?
Hello every one, our G sedan has 20,000 miles on it and it is due for its oil change at around 22,000 miles. I was woundering, would it be alrite to switch over to Mobile 1 synthetic or is it to late? Would it void the warrenty? And what weight and filter do you recomend?
Thanks you all

Change to Mobil One
I should clarify that with the "old" formulation of Mobil One, a switch to this oil at 20000 miles caused substantial rear main seal leakage of my 944 Turbo engine. I would still make this change again as I was trying to increase the reliability of the turbocharger oiling system vs dino oil. My preference, based on experience, would be to change earlier. I changed over my G35 at 7500 miles, and my Corvette Z06 came from the factory with Mobil One oil.
With my Volvo V70 T5 I changed to Mobil 1 synthetic oil at the first oil change
at 5000 miles. I changed oil every 5000 miles, sold it with 95K miles without
any engine oil problems.
I might change to synthetic at my 7500 mile service.

Isn't "mineral oi"l used for an upset tummy?? You coulda' changed to Syn. 20,000 miles ago via your first oil change. I've been using Syn. for over 15 years...EXCLUSIVELY. That means in my fleet of 6 tractor trailers, all my motorcycles, and in all my cars. I always switched over at my first oil change. Not good enough....? How 'bout Corvettes and Vipers comming in with Mobil ! already installed? How 'bout most all high end Euro cars as well??? Do it. The US military has for about 30 years as well.

Dino vs Synthetic seems to come up all the time on this board.
Bottom line, do whatever you feel comfortable with. It is perfectly safe to change it out at mile 1. Like mentioned above, there are vehicles coming from the factory with synthetic already installed.
I've sent samples of my oil out at 6 month intervals for most of my cars and I can tell you that changing to synthetic has had no ill effects as some might want you to believe. Send your oil to Blackstone Labs and have it analyzed after ~3500 miles with synthetic and see for yourself.

Is there any other reason to use synthetic other than to have the oilchange be done after longer periods of time? If there is no other "improovement" I dont mind doing the oilchanges every 3k miles.

regular oil on my G for 20K miles now. change my oil every 3-4K. did this w/ a previous car no problem. did synthetic too early on on another car before no problem. benefits? longer oil change intervals only on synthetic. same engine life expectancy, both reached 150K miles solidly before i sold them.
Here we go again!
There is no reason to break-in an engine on non-synthetic oil. Porsche has been using synthetic as their factory fill for years.
My company builds racing engines and we have found that using synthetic oil while breaking-in a new engine actually improves the break-in process. Bearings, cams, piston rings, and cylinder walls have consistently been in better condition after break-in using synthetic oil. The break-in process is a time of great stress on an engine, especially during start up. better and more consistent lubrication is critical.
As far as synthetics causing seal and gasket leak problems, TOTAL CRAP! Seals and gaskets ether leak or they don't. It does not matter what kind of oil you are using. Period.

Sorry, but your reasoning is way off. Infiniti cannot deny you warranty services simply because you've changed your oil to a synthetic. They would have the burden of proof to show that changing to a synthetic somehow was the cause of failure for any malfunctions that occurred.
You do realize that some Infiniti service stations offer the option of putting in synthetic don't you?
How is my reasoning off by suggesting seattleG contact Infiniti to get a defintive answer?

It's nice to know we have an official Infiniti rep on the board. >8|
